They Are Not Prepared To Protect The Indivudual Applicant From Probate
1 stars - stgold - Thursday, April 12, 2012 - 6:35 PM

they can not set up a beneficiary or payable on death account and can only set up a joint account or an individual account without a bene. which would mean upon death it would have to go to probate!

Very Good Bank
5 stars - strikethree - Tuesday, March 27, 2012 - 8:19 PM

So, I've been banking with TIAA for about a month now. I'm writing this review mainly because I don't think the other reviews are giving an accurate description of the bank.

So, I tried applying online but it said that my application was being reviewed. Anyway, they called me (I think it was next day) and they walked me through the entire online process. The rep helped me open an online account and was very friendly. Every time I had a question, it was always answered promptly. Also, I'm not sure what the reviewer was talking about bring unable to access his/her account. I log in almost every day and I haven't expereinced any problems. (they do go on down time when it's late at night and updating) I suspect the reviewer isn't logging in through the correct website: you have to go through Home -- and not tiaa-cref.org.

The fees are about average (but definitely not like Bank of America) but the rates are good and online/mobile capabilities are good too. (you just have to activate mobile and call them to set it up)

I've been pretty happy with TIAA so far.

Opened Account Within Minutes/Best Rates
5 stars - 2Tall - Wednesday, March 28, 2012 - 9:41 AM

Opened a money market without any problems. Also opened external links to other banks in two days. Sent an email about the site and received a response the next day. They will send you an ATM card (ATM Only) that can be used at 23,000 ATM's with no surcharge fee's.

The only disadvantage that I've seen is when you do a transfer from another financial institute to your account, it don't show the name of the financial institute, but rather the account number i.e. xxxxxx1234.

Just Tried To Open The Money Market Account And It Failed.
3 stars - meadler - Wednesday, February 22, 2012 - 4:34 PM

After taking the time to open an account on line, I got the following message: "We could not process your request. Sorry. We couldn't process your request. Please contact us toll-free at 855 842-2372 for assistance."  I called, and the rep couldn't get it to work either, so now I have to wait for them to call me back.  Although the rate is good, I have to warn you that there are a couple of important concerns.  The rep told me that you CANNOT add a beneficiary to the account.  This is terrible!!!  If you die, the account will pass to your estate, instead of being done the normal way of being able to designate a beneficiary. PLUS, they do not allow you to open the account in the name of a Trust or for your children if under 18 through a UGTMA.  Again, great rate, but lots of limits!

Website Is Horrible
1 stars - bank_dude - Thursday, May 3, 2012 - 6:22 PM

Was on the phone with their CS for over an hour trying to get the secirity word and image to work. They werent able to do it. They keep having me try over and over again until i gave up and told them to cancel the account. Definitely not a good sign if the security features on the bank's website dont work properly. No thanks. I'll pass...

No Way To Name Beneficiaries
3 stars - dwallen - Tuesday, April 10, 2012 - 11:06 AM

It's been noted elsewhere that TIAA has no way to name beneficiaries on their savings accounts.  I confirmed today that this also applies to money market accounts.  It can't be done either online or on paper, and the CSR said there is no anticipated date when this will be available.

Personally, I can't justify puttng significant money into an account with this limitation.  I'd rather take a lower rate from someone who offers this.  Especially since the market-leading rate here may well be cut sometime after the product launch.
