Shades Of The Old Days When We Account-Holders Were King

WTDirect - May your actions be a sign of things to come

Today, completely out of the blue, came a FedX-delivered gift from WTDirect where I've had an account for about 6 months. This completely unsolicited surprise was in the form of an attractive box which, tied with a yellow ribbon, contained a set of 2 beautiful Reidel Tumblers from Tiffany & Co.  A card in the box said, "Enjoy this gift, along with our sincere appreciation for saving with WTDirect."

The value of the gift is of no consequence, but the fact that this bank took the trouble and expense to send this unexpected message of appreciation, has given my morale a boost. It can't help but remind me of the good-ole-days when we got toasters, cameras, radios, etc for opening an account or adding significantly to an existing one (and even got respectable interest rates)  It's unlikely that my current pleasant experiene is heralding better times to come, but it was such a pleasant surprise that I thought I would share it with you.

Sorry I Opened It
1 stars - highyielder - Saturday, October 30, 2010 - 9:29 PM

I opened account to get the $300 bonus - and, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have done it - not worth it. As it is, I'll keep the account open long enough to get the bonus, but unless they make some major changes, WTDirect will be history for me.

ACH Transfers take FOUR business days! Holy cow. Really horrible. And your money "disapears" during the transfer - it's not at WTDirect, and it's not at the other institution.

And, the website is really horrible: extensive use of Flash elements require high-speed connection and make it nearly impossible to use secure access methods when traveling or on wifi networks (ie: VPN tunnel or remote desktop access both choke when high-bandwidth flash or just flashy oversized high-res images are used on a website). Banking website doesn't need to look pretty - it needs to be FUNCTIONAL and WTDirect fails miserably in this regard.

Not just because of the oversized images and flash, but some idiot must have thought of this one: log in to online banking and you get a screen with a big button to click to launch online banking! You are logged in, but you need to make another click to actually get to your account. And this click OPENS A POPUP WINDOW! Incorrectly sized, and they've even disabled the ability to merge the popup into main browser window (Firefox CTRL+M feature). I really really hate popups. And to make you do your banking in an incorrectly-sized popup? And your main browser window retains the useless page you "logged in" to which must remain. This is truly idiotic.

Got My $500 Bonus
4 stars - cornfield - Wednesday, September 22, 2010 - 7:35 AM

So far I have been happy with the account at WTDirect.  The account opening was a little chaotic, but I have found the customer service people to be knowledgeable and helpful.  And I can even understand what they are saying on the phone.   Wish my health insurance company was that good.

I have dealt with Ally and many others - Capital One, NetBank (now gone), etc.  I would recommend this bank to anyone.

I will say the I have also been happy with Ally and their ACH transfers are the fastest of any of the internet banks I have used.

Will I keep this account open after the bonus - with the recent rate bump, I will.  If I hadn't gotten the rate bump I would probably close the account to chase rates.

Great Bank But Odd Verification Question Asked
5 stars - bankdude11 - Thursday, January 6, 2011 - 9:34 AM

WT direct is a great bank for the most part to deal with...however I just called and was asked the following info to verify who I am:

my account number
my full name
my date of birth
my last 4 of the SSN
my physical address

and

my email address

I asked the rep if email address was really necessary to verify who I am...and if he would refuse to talk to me if I happened to not remember what email address I used to sign up (I have quite a few and can't confirm it on the spot).  It took me 3 tries to finally guess which one I used...but it seems really odd that a bank needs to verify your identity based on email.  I specifically asked if it was because he needed it for his "Records" (ie - marketing and statement purposes) or whether it was really for verification of my identity.  He said it was for verification.

Has anyone come across this???

I Opened An Account Online With $50
3 stars - Anonymous - Thursday, June 3, 2010 - 10:20 AM

I opened an account online with $50,000 to get the $500 bonus promo that was offered for a brief period at the end of May 2010. The account setup process was simple, however they said that they would send an email confirmation of the account opening, but I never got the confirmation email. I was able to confirm the trial deposits and the fund transfer into the account went okay. A second problem was that my online account access was not set up automatically, so I could not view what was in my account. When I tried to log in after a week had passed, I would just get a message saying that my login setup would take 1-2 business days. Eventually, I called the bank and they were able to set the login up so I could access my account. The interest rate on this account is lower than what I was getting elsewhere, so once I get the $500 bonus credited, I will move most of the money out to wherever is offering the best rate.
