Change in ING Direct's Referral Program

The CD changes were not the only changes at ING today. ING Direct is getting tougher in its referral program. If you refer someone to join ING Direct, that person needs to open an account with at least $250 to get the $25 bonus. Also, you won't receive the referrer $10 bonus without that person opening his or her account with at least $250. If the savings referral was sent prior to Oct 13, 2005, no initial deposit minimum is required for bonus payment.
Although $250 isn't much, I suspect most people prefer to open the account with a small initial deposit. After the account is opened and they get comfortable with it, they'll make additional deposits. Looks like this won't be possible anymore if you want to get the $25 bonus. You'll have to make that opening deposit at least $250. You can still open an account with deposits under $250, but neither you nor the referrer will get the bonuses.
Perhaps too many people have been opening accounts and getting bonuses with only $1 deposits. At least they're keeping the referral program. ING's rules don't state how long the $250 has to reside in the account. So you probably could open an account with $250 and then transfer most of it out later, and that will still qualify for the bonus.
