Some More iPod Bank Promotions
Oct 18, 2005 - 8:55 AM by Ken Tumin
Thanks to a comment I received, I learned about this iPod shuffle promotion from NetBank. Open and fund a NetBank Money Market account or 1-year CD with $1000 and receive a free iPod shuffle. Note, this offer is only available to first-time NetBank deposit customers, and you must apply through the links on the promotion page. I don't see this promotion being advertised from NetBank's main web pages so I can't guarantee it's available to everyone. Sometimes banks make these offers to select customers.
NetBank just increased the rate on the 1-year CD from 4.40% to 4.45% APY. That's 0.25% higher than ING Direct's 1-year CD, and it's only 0.15% under the best 1-year CDs that I've found from online banks. As for their money market account, it's paying only 3.20% which is even under ING's 3.40% savings account rate. Netbank also has other promotions where you can get cash for opening accounts. Refer to this previous post.
I haven't found any other iPod deals on bank deposits. There is a good deal involving the Charles Schwab credit card. To get the iPod shuffle, just apply for this card (which has no annual fees) and use it at least once. Schwab has been changing this offer every couple of months so I'm not sure how long it'll last. Previous promotions gave $150 and $100 VISA gift cards.
Citi also has an iPod shuffle promotion with its Citi Professional Card. However, this requires that you make $500 in purchases within the first 3 months.
Check out this post for Citibank's iPod deal, and for those living around Dallas, check out this post for another iPod deal.

Your site is amazing and it has become one of my favorites. I visit almost everyday and found' it very useful. Thank you very much for the good work.
Justt a general question though - do you know if our credit history would be queries for opening any bank accounts - savings or checkings or CD? several offers are exciting and now i am getting tempted for the iPod deal :-)

Thanks for the feedback.
About the credit history query, that is something to be concerned about. Found this thread at Fatwallet which discusses this and lists banks and other places that do hard credit queries.

Chase just came out with this offer. You can get a Nano for a Checking Select account or Shuffle with a Free Checking account.
Chase definitely doesn't have it's act together. The general add says "open the account, open direct deposit and pay 3 bills online". The details under the Checking SELECT Nano doesn't say you need direct deposit. I called Chase and the branch. both said I didn't need direct deposit with Checking SELECt for the Nano, but when I went into the branch, they changed their tune. Direct deposit is required with both.
In addition, their website says keep $25000 in to avoid fees, yet the in branch literature says $30000.
Ok, fine, so it you are willing to jump through these hoops I asked my next question. What rates do I get on $25000 in the Checking Select account. Unbelievable, Saving 1.09 and Checking 0.3
In addition, they'll report $199 of interest on your 1099-INT, so you'll have to pay taxes on the value of your Nano.
I thought about and then realized. Hey, I can put $25000 into an ING Driect account at 3.75%. Over 6 months, the min required for Chase, I'll make $468.75 in interest. That's $269.75 Plus $199 to buy a Nano myself. Chase, thanks anyway!

Brad, thanks for the info. I also posted about this new deal at this post. It does have a lot of hoops to jump through with a lot of potential fees.

I keep getting conflicting information about this iPod promotion from Chase bank. My friend opened a checking account with direct deposit to get the iPod shuffle, but I see on the website that the iPod nano is also available. On Chase's website, it doesn't look like there's any difference between the promotions except direct deposit for the shuffle and just checking for the nano. I'm very confused. I would love to get the nano and I could afford to put $1000 in the bank immediately and sign up for direct deposit. My friend told me the reason she didn't get a nano was because they required a $50 000 deposit. I haven't seen that written anyway, hence the confusion. What do I have to do to get an iPod nano? Thanks.
