Compass Bank's $50 Checking Account Promotion

Jan 24, 2006 - 8:02 AM by Ken Tumin

Compass Bank is offering a $50 Amazon gift card when you open a new Compass Free Checking account. Here's the link to the promotion. It only requires a deposit of at least $50 into the checking account within 30 days of registering for this offer. Be sure to review the terms and conditions at the bottom of the promo page, but it seems like an easy deal.

To qualify, you must be a resident of Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico or Texas, and you must not already have a Compass checking account.

If you're looking for a new checking account, Compass Bank's Free Checking account may be worthwhile even without this promotion. Some nice features include no minimum balance requirements, no direct deposit requirements, free checks for the life of the account and rebates of other banks' ATM fees. However, the rebates do require mailing Compass the receipts showing the ATM surcharges.

Credit for this deal goes to this SlickDeals thread. Compass had this same promotion last year and several people mentioned that it was an easy $50. However, there were a couple of people on this thread who reported problems with Compass Bank although there are not many details.

I know it's late to say this, but if anybody who is fairly young and from AZ applies for a Compass checking account, you might run into problems. Apparently, the online application form does not except exceptionally high expiration dates on its Driver's License section. I am 24 and AZ sets most expiration dates at 65 y/o. . . therefore, 2046 just doesn't compute when trying to apply online. I called in when I applied no problem, but apparently this is a common speed bump for online applicants from AZ. When I mentioned that I was from AZ and had a high expiration date on my license, the Compass CSR quickly said that such is a common problem. I wonder if it is a frequent nuisance for AZ applicants, why don't they fix the bug on the application form? Oh well. . . I still opened the act and will fund it with the $50, thereby getting my Amazon gift certificate. Thanks. . . as always, your tips are great.

(Thanks, school teacher, but you missed the point regarding the much appreciated shared info. By the by, you'll be having a real problema con text messaging y los citicientes nuevas que no escriben ingles o espanol muy bien. Muchos problemas, Ramona!)
To the point, I did all that was required by the bank promo and I'm still waiting for the ipod. Looks like the bank stiffed me. It's been three months and the banker's asking me to please be patient. I'd like to know if anyone else got the shaft, or how long it took until they delivered the ipod.

Hello. I see you are discussing Compass Bank here. I think that the bank is quite ok. Not perfect, however. The interest rates on deposits are rather high and on mortgages quite moderate. But the customer service is awful. It is so hard to get someone to help you or give any additional information. They are so busy there. Browse www.pissedconsumer.com to find more about the bank.
