iPod Nano Checking/Savings Account Bonus at TCF Bank

POSTED ON BY

TCF Bank is offering a free iPod 1G nano when you open any personal or small business checking account (with recurring Automatic Payment and Direct Deposit services) plus a new Savings account. Establishing just one service qualifies for a $50 Visa Gift Card. This special doesn't seem to be listed at their website, but an ad was published in the March 26th Denver Post newspaper and is available online here.

TCF Bank has a Totally Free Checking account; however, the savings accounts seem to have minimum required balances to avoid a fee.

Some of the important small print of this deal includes:

This is open to households without a checking account in the past 90 days. The new savings account requires minimum opening deposit equal to the minimum balance required to avoid a monthly fee, or $500, whichever is greater. The value of the bonus will be reported as interest income on your current year 1099-INT.

Netbank had a good iPod CD/money market promotion which seemed to have expired in Feburary (see post).

TCF Bank also had a nice $75 Checking Account bonus. That expired on March 17 (see post).

TCF has 453 banking locations in six states, including Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado and Indiana.

[Update on 5/28/06: There's a new iPod nano deal at TCF. Refer to this post.]

I am tired of the banks offering all of their 'great' deals, but only to find you must work for giant corporate america -- otherwise, it is doubtful you will have direct deposit.

You might be able to use ACH transfers from online banks (like ING Direct) to count as direct deposits. Refer to this post for more info.

its easy for me, i work for walgreens, and its a snap to do direct deposit and to even split direct deposit to two different banks....so pay some small bills, and get a free nano!

I have a feeling that it's only good at the branches.

BTW, there's a new iPod nano promotion at TCF Bank. Refer to this post for more info.

i think my employer doesnt know how to do a direct deposit. when u get direct deposits into ur account, does the transcation detail SAY "direct deposit" or does it just say "DEPOSIT" ...? i told my employer to do a direct deposit for me, and gave em a void check wit the red form that tcf gave me. my employer told me that he did a direct deposit for me. but when it shows up on my account statement online, it just says deposit. ...so... is that the same thing as a direct deposit?..

I had the same problem with getting my Ipod and I kept calling and calling and everytime I went to the branches I would complain. A few weeks ago, I finally got it. And then yesterday, I received a second one. I did so much complaining that they put in two orders for me. I guess TCF is good for only one thing, messing up orders. Ha ha.

I never received anything from TCF and completed all the coupons and had my checks direct deposited. I had 19,000 in the account when I complained and they still didn't take care of it. I have now taken about 15K of that and put it into another bank. TCF is a horrible banking establishment and also has history of leaking SSN.

Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to make readers aware of these bad experiences on the next TCF promo.

No matter what TCF 'gives' away, this is the WORST possible bank to even pretend to deal with. You might as well send me 1/3 your direct deposit instead of giving it to the bloodsucking, soul-less, sacks of meat they are. Seriously. Banking with them is like getting a prostate exam from jack-frost.

tcf sucks - I followed the rules of the game - only for the banker Mr. Vito (ST.Charles, IL Branch) and Louis Early (ST.Charles, IL Branch - now with MELROSE Branch) both duped me - I hate TCF - and am going to close all my accounts there
