ING Direct / VirtualBank Referral Bonuses

ING Direct's Winter Save Up Sale may be over, but at least they still have one of the best referral bonuses. This helps to make up for the fact that their rates have lagged many of their online competitors by about 0.5% over the last year.

If you plan to keep a small balance, a signup bonus can be more important than top rates. For example, if you plan only to keep $500 in the account, it'll take 10 years of interest at EmigrantDirect to exceed the $25 ING referral bonus plus the interest at ING Direct (assuming ING continues to lag by 0.5%). The referral bonus has the extra benefit in that after you sign up, you can make $10 for each referral bonus you send to a friend.

ING Direct Referral Bonus

I've used up all my ING Direct referrals, however, a friend who has helped me on this blog still has many left. He has created a special email address to receive referral requests @ bankreferral@gmail.com. Please make sure to include "ING Direct" and your first and last name in the email.

The referral bonus pays $25 when you sign up at ING Direct and make an initial deposit of $250. There is no minimum balance requirement after the hold period is over. You can make $10 for each referral that you make up to a total of $250.

Virtual Bank Referral Bonus

Virtual Bank has a similar referral bonus as ING Direct. In VirtualBank's case, the bonus is $20 and the person sending the bonus gets $20. The initial deposit has to be at least $100 for the eMoney Market account. There is no minimum after the account is opened. Currently Virtual Bank is paying a nice 4.60% APY. However, the interest rate did lag for most of last year. For more info on VirtualBank and the referral bonus, refer to this previous post.

Virtual Bank handles referrals a little different than ING Direct in that once you send a referral, you can't cancel it. So if the person doesn't join within 30 days, you lose that referral opportunity. If you would like a Virtual Bank referral, please send a request to my friend @ bankreferral@gmail.com with your first and last name and specifying that you want a VirtualBank referral.

I read reviews on various banking sites about experiences with online banks. I saw that ING direct got good reviews and that it was fairly easy to use. I read on a forum somewhere that you could get a free $25 for signing up, all you had to do was get referred. I sent emails to a few people that posted on forums to try and find a working link, but that took awhile. I spent awhile looking around on google for working links before I found a good one. This account is nice because it doesn't require you to fill out anything and mail it in like other banks. They'll send your other account 2 small deposits (less than a dollar) and then you verify your account like that. The form was very simple and the entire sign-up process was a breeze. I could login right away and check the current status of my account and everything. My free $25 showed up right away, even though they said it could take a month or so to show up. I would definitely recommend it and I'm transferring the rest of my money into this savings account to earn the high interest.

Important: 1.) Copy and paste one of the links below into a new browser window. 2.) In the new window click where it says "Open Now" 3.) Also, I have nothing but good things to say about ING Direct. I have been using them for over a year now. Their rates have gone up steadily (no lag). Their customer service is outstanding. When you call the 800 number there is no computer menu! I called today and within 10 seconds I was talking to a REAL live person. You don't see that anymore these days! Impressive for an online bank.

Virtual Bank has a great referral program. You get $20 for signing up off my referral and I get $20 for having you sign up. Once you have an account you can start to refer others - upto 50 others. What to watch for:
There is a $50 penalty if you close and cancel your account within 90 days.

If you're undecided between opening an account with ING Direct or Virtual Bank, my recommendation would be Virtual Bank. Here's why:

1. Currently, Virtual Bank's e-Money Market earns 4.6% APY whereas ING Direct Savings earns 4.4%.

2. The minimum deposit amount for Virtual Bank is only $100 whereas it's $250 for Ing Direct. While ING Direct's sign-up bonus of $25 seems more generous than Virtual Bank's $20, actually, you're getting 10% in interest with ING whereas you would be making 20% of your money in interest with Virtual Bank.

In the end, I really don't see why you shouldn't open both accounts (and close one or the other or both after the mandatory incubation period) to pick up the free money they're throwing at you, but if for any personal preference you want to open just one of the two, I would say you're currently better off with Virtual Bank.

My third and last reason for opting for Virtual Bank is that while both ING and Virtual Bank both offer opportunities for you to pick up bonuses for referring other clients once you have an active account with them, ING only pays you $10 (and something like $250 max) while Virtual Bank pays you $20 just for referring and you can earn $1000 maximum. That, I think, is a very attractive perk for going with Virtual Bank.

Having said that, both banks are reliable and very easy to bank with, and I'm happy with both. I still have lots of referrals for both ING Direct and Virtual Bank if you would like me to send you one within 12 hours (I do obsess with emails...)

Hi, I still have more than 30 referrals left for Virtual Bank and 22 for Ing Direct (I'm fairly new to this bank though with Virtual Bank, I'm a bit of an "older timer" now).

Virtual Bank has given me "virtually" no problems in terms of crediting my referral bonuses. As soon as I refer a friend, they credit my account in less than 3 business days. Ing Direct has been lagging in terms of crediting my account. For instance, I'd referred my mom to ING on 11/17/06, but until I called them today "demanding" my $10 referral bonus, they had not credited my account. However, the phone call took less than 5 minutes, and once they received my call, they speedily gave me what was due. I plan on keeping my ING direct at minimum funding and putting my money at higher-rate banks; currently, I have some money in at Everbank checking (6.01% APY for the first 3 months of opening the account), Emigrant Direct (5.15% APY; I have pennies here since most of my money is sitting at Everbank where it's collecting 6.01% interest, but once that promotion's over, I plan on transferring the money to Emigrant); then I have a couple of hundred dollars in ING Direct and the rest tied up in the Virtual Bank 12-month CD (at 5.85% API, not bad at all). I also plan on transferring $100 to the Virtual Bank e-money market account once my CD matures with them.

So far, my bank-bonus shopping has been fun and rewarding. I recommend it to anyone who wants the safest, highest yield on every dollar they invest!

Good news! ING Direct Money Market interest rate just went up to 4.5%. making it among the top 8% of the highest yielding bank in savings.

I'm happy to report that the referral bonus problems I've been having with Ing Direct is not resolved--my referral bonuses are being credited to my account right away.

Virtual Bank has been wonderful as usual in crediting my referral pay.

I want to apologize to anyone who might have been offended by my comment the other day that I wouldn't trust with referral links. I didn't mean to insinuate that any of the links here on this site or any other are dubious--I simply don't know. I am, however, speaking from experience with ID thefts and am personally weary of clicking on links where I must type in personal information, including my SS#. I'm sure most of these links are valid; I just wouldn't want to be a victim to that one link that's bad; that's all.

I still have lots of referrals for both ING and Virtual Bank. If I had to choose between the two, I would say Virtual Bank is better simply because they are faster with crediting the referral bonuses into my account. With ING, I had to call in to request that my account be credited (once I called, they were absolutely very helpful). I still say you should open both!

I have also enjoyed the referral bonuses from ING but was a little disappointed that the interest rate lags from other nearly identical accounts (i.e Emigrantdirect with 5.05% APY-same exact ease of use).

What I did was deposit $250 to get the bonus and then withdrew after 1 month to keep only a minimal balance with ING, with the rest of my money in a higher interest bearing account.

With no minimum balance, I keep ING open just to collect the referrals, but don't have to settle for the lower interest rate!

Thoughts anyone??

I've had a CD account with Virtual Bank since last March but didn't know about their $1000 referral bonus opportunity until early November of '06. Since then, I've made about $500 just on referral bonuses.

As with my ING Direct account, I probably made signifcantly less, maybe about $100 so far (not including my initial $25 sign-up bonus. While ING Direct's referral bonus (for the referree) is only $10 and can't quite compete with the generous $20 Virtual Bank bonus, I still have to say that the great thing about ING is that they do credit you super fast--within the hour of the referred person's application sign-up.

I really think this is an easy (and fun) way to make free money. In short, if you're thinking about opening an account with either ING or VB (or both--why NOT??), I would say go for it, not only for the $25 and $20 sign-up bonuses, respectively, but for the chance to make $1250 thereafter just referring others to sign up.

Lastly, it literally takes 10 seconds to refer someone to open either VB or ING. The referral link with directions come directly from the banks, so you really don't have to do anything but type in the referred person's name & email address. That's all!

I still have lots of referrals left for Virtual Bank and ING Direct if you're interested. All I need is your first and last name & your preferred email address. I do respond within 14 hours, usually much sooner than that.

FYI, if you're undecided about either ING or Virtual, I would recommend ING. This is because while ING credits the $25 bonus almost immediately and is hassle-free to sign up an account, Virtual these days tends to be SLOW, requesting additional documents by fax or mail and taking a while to credit the $20 bonus. I've had quite a few family members sign up for both accounts (to pick up the bonuses), and with ING, my folks are perfectly happy while some of them have simply given up on Virtual Bank. My bro for instance, applied with Virtual; they asked for him to fax the drivers license and utility bill which he did, but then thereafter, he didn't hear from them, period. After leaving several messages, he just gave up. Hopefully this is an exception as Virtual used to be quite efficient in the past, but given their mediocre rates and slow services, I'd definitely not deposit more than the mandatory $100, take everything out soon thereafter except a buck or two, and just cancel after the 6-month window.
