6.25% 6-Month CD at a Michigan CU

Jun 15, 2006 - 7:51 AM by Ken Tumin

United Christian Community Credit Union has two special certificates of deposit: 6.25% 6-month CD and a 5.75% 12-month CD. The minimum for both is $1K. This is a limited time offer.

The field of membership may be opened to anyone:
Membership in United Christian Community Credit Union is open to all family members and relatives of current members, and anyone who donates a minimum of $1 to the Lutheran Aid Foundation.

However, I'm not sure if this credit union can handle a national customer base and maintain these special CDs. I tried to get more info by email (they have an AOL email address), but I didn't get a response. It's a small one-branch credit union located in Troy, Michigan. It has $29 million in assets and 3,900 members. The credit union is NCUA insured.

I called today and spoke with CONNIE. She confirmed everything, except they will NOT do an application in the mail. You MUST come in person to open the account. They say this is a policy of their Board of Directors.

I called as well. Was told I must come in AND be a resident of their local area in Michigan.

Thanks for checking on this. At least those around Troy are able to take advantage of these CD specials.

A reader looked up the financial ratings of this credit union: Bauer Financial: 4/5 stars, and Bankrate.com: 2/5 stars. Refer to my NCUA link to review this credit union's financial details.

They should honor what they advertise.

Yes, I wish more banks would be more careful about what they advertise and be clear about who is eligible. Could save everyone lots of time.
