Bank Deal Summary for June 3, 2006

Jun 3, 2006 - 5:06 PM by Ken Tumin

The wait for the 5% no-minimum savings account from a major online bank continues. Unless ING does a summer save up sale, it's unlikely that ING Direct will be the first. This week ING Direct bumped up its savings account rate from 4.15% to 4.25% APY continuing its lackluster performance (see post).

A new high yield savings account came out this week from Ascencia Bank with an APY of 4.75% and a minimum deposit requirement of only $50. There are no minimum balance requirements or monthly maintenance fees (see post). This account isn't new but the previous rate was only 1.25%. We'll have to wait and see if it'll continue with high rates.

Countrywide Bank increased the yield on its new Savingslink account for balances over $50K. The APY is now 5%. The APY between $1K and $50K remains at 4.25%. For those with large balances, this may be a nice account. It can also make it easier to open one of their competitive CDs.

For CDs, there were several disappointments this week. Corus Bank ended its long streak of rising CD rates. Corus Bank's 1-year and 6-month CD remained at 5.45% and 5.30% APY. Pentagon FCU made some major reductions on its CD rates. The 6% 3-year CD dropped to 5.31%. Also, Agricultural FCU ended its 6% 6-month special CD. However, they are still offering a 6.36% 3-year CD (see post).

There were a couple of CD bright spots this week. Crestmark Bank re-started offering several high yield CDs including a 5.30% 90-day CD, 5.50% 180-day CD and a 5.65% 1-year CD. The bank isn't the most user friendly. CDs and applications must be done by mail (see post).

Some more CD bright spots this week included a small bump-up in GMAC Bank CD rates and a new 5.41% APY 1-year EverBank CD. I've now added EverBank in my list. With some competitive CD rates combined with a nice 5.51% 3-month checking account promotion, they may be a good bank for the long term.

Thanks to all who have helped by leaving comments or sending emails on rate updates. Sorry I can't include all of the best rates in this summary.

The rates listed below are based on Annual Percentage Yield (APY). No minimum balances are required unless noted. MMA next to the rates indicate a money market account. Most MMAs have check writing and ATM cards. Online savings accounts usually lack both of these. Previous weekly summaries are available for May 27th, May 20th, May 13th, May 6th, Apr 29th, Apr 22nd and Apr 15th.
