8.30% 8-Month CD at an Arizona CU - $8K Max (Arizona Holsum)
Sep 26, 2006 - 1:50 PM by Ken Tumin
Arizona Holsum Credit Union is offering a special 8.30% APY 8-month certificate of deposit. The minimum is $800 and the maximum deposit is $8,000. It requires new money and an active checking account.
The maximum is not too bad at $8K. The 8.30% APY for 8 months can result in about an extra $160 over a competitive short term CD.
The field of membership includes those who live in the local community of the credit union. In addition to families, friends of members are also included. The branch is located in Phoenix.
The credit union is NCUA insured. It's a small credit union with $15 million in assets and 1,766 members.
Thanks to Michael who mentioned this special in the finding deals post.

A great deal but it's a little difficult to take advantage. They are planning to end this on 30 Sept., by which date all paperwork must be in their hands. They will accept only original paperwork which they must send you first - snail mail only. For folks in the Phoenix area, though, time remains and this is not a problem if you are able to visit in person.

Thanks for the heads up about this great promotion! Today I went in person (it's maybe 15 minutes from my work) and signed up for the checking acct, shares, and CD. It took maybe 5-10 minutes and they warned me that they would do a credit pull for the checking account. They also asked where I heard about them, and I said the internet. Make sure and request the Enhanced Checking account, since this is the one with no monthly fees.

Response to the first post: It seems that this deal is still ongoing. I debated taking up on this deal but instead, last night, bought a 10 month High Yield 5% CD through Bank of America ($10,000 minimum deposit). I'm a shareholder of B of A, so I have to support my stock somehow. But I'm going to check and see if this Holsum deal will still continue the first week of November. Then maybe take them up.

I am currently opening this CD. I live in Colorado, and I called to make sure that I could open this CD. They told me yes, and sent me the info to open this CD. The active checking acct. qualification is no longer necessary. You only have to open up the share savings acct. with $25 to be eligible for the CD. So what are you waiting for get yourself and 8% CD.

Thanks for the info. How were you able to meet their membership eligibility requirements? Sometimes credit unions will allow you to join by first joining some non-profit organization which can satisfy their field-of-membership.

Apparently there are no eligibility requirements. I told them on the phone that I lived in Colorado, and they said that was OK. They sent me the smallest application I have ever seen in the mail. On the application there was a section that asked for your eligibility, so I called and asked what I should put there. They told me to just put Internet. I guess this is to let them know that I saw the offer on the Internet. I am still waiting for the check to clear, and them to send me all my acct. info in the mail. Will follow up once this is received.

Thanks for the info. It shows that it pays to always ask a credit union about eligibility. Please keep us posted on the account opening.
One thing I've noticed about many Arizona credit unions is that people can qualify for membership if referred by any current member. It's like an extension of the family member connection. Perhaps Holsum has extended this a bit more.

I am the guy from Colorado who is trying to get this 8% CD. I just called and confirmed that my account was opened. They actually gave me my login info over the phone, so I could access my accts. I logged in and sure enough there is $25 in the share savings acct, and $8000 in the 8% CD. Yeah hah!!! The great thing is that the money I put in there is being loaned to me from one of my Chase credit cards for 0% until next Nov. 2007, and the CD will mature on 8/18/07. I love FREE MONEY. Now if I can figure out how to get in on the Chartway CU 7% CD , I would be set. Any ideas???

Congrats on the CD. Glad it worked out okay. About Chartway, their field-of-membership is not well described on their website. A CSR may be able to give you a way to join. I didn't have that luck earlier in the year. If you do find an easy eligibility criteria, please let us know.

I just rang Arizona Holsum (name to be changed to Arizona Heritage), and a respresentative called Michelle told me that the max amount I could put it had increased from 8k to 88k.She told me she was 100% sure of this change. Given that the NCUA covers us for up to 100k, would any of you have any reservations about putting the max amount in one of their CDs? (Note also that applications need to be postmarked on the 31st December to be accepted). Any advice would be appreciated.
