Bank Deal Summary for October 7, 2006

Oct 7, 2006 - 4:10 PM by Ken Tumin

The new E-LOAN savings account remains the best deal this week for a high yield online savings account. I couldn't resist the 5.50% APY and opened an account this week. The opening process and the ACH transfers have been easy and quick (see post).

There were a few banks which increased rates on their savings accounts this week. Everbank extended its 3-month 6.01% APY promo to its money market account, but the 6.01% checking account promo remains the better deal in my opinion (see post). GMAC Bank did a substantial rate hike on its Money Market Savings account yesterday. The new rate is 5.25% APY (up from 5.00% APY). GMAC had been falling behind the last couple of months. It's good to see GMAC getting back into the game. Unlike most of the other accounts with rates at and above 5.25%, GMAC's Money Market Savings account has limited check writing and one of the best ACH transfer systems (see post). There's a new second place savings account rate leader this week. BankUnited increased its savings account rate from 5.25% to 5.35% APY. BankUnited continues to make this account very competitive. Unfortunately, it's not easy to open and lacks an ACH transfer system (see post).

Long-term CD rates continued to trend down this week. Finding a 36-month or longer term CD that yields 6% seems to be getting more difficult each week. After Pentagon FCU ended its 6% CDs in September, the only long-term CD rate at 6% available nationally was a 60-month CD at Members Credit Union. This has now gone down to 5.75%.

In addition to the top savings account rate, E-LOAN's CD rates are at the top or near the top for every term. So if you're looking for a high yield long-term CD, E-LOAN may be your best choice.

VirtualBank had an odd rate change on its CDs this week. The good news is that the 9-month CD rate went up from 5.15% to 5.39% APY. The bad news is that the 6-month CD rate dropped from 5.15% to 4.86% APY and the 12-month CD rate dropped from 5.15% to 4.60% APY. This shows the need to not let CDs renew without reviewing the current rates.

For short term CDs, there are still several 6% CDs available nationally. Unfortunately, there weren't any new ones this week. World Savings is still offering a 6.01% APY 7-month CD. It's an unadvertised branch-only special (see post). Patelco Credit Union has a 6% CD for terms of 12 to 23 months (see post) and Digital Credit Union still has its 6.00% APY 16-month CD (see post).

If you can't get a 6% CD from a national bank or credit union, you may be able to get one at a local institution. A 6% 12-month CD became available this week at Canyon State Credit Union which should be available for most residents of Arizona (see post). First Tech Credit Union just started a 6% 7-month CD promotion. Many residents of Oregon and Washington State should be able to qualify for this (see post). For a complete list of these recent local CD deals, refer to my local CD list below. Remember that many of these deals don't last long. Please check if the rate is still active at the bank or credit union's website. If you see that a deal has ended, a comment is much appreciated.

Thanks to all who have helped by leaving comments or sending emails on rate updates. Sorry I can't post on all of your suggestions.

The rates listed below are based on Annual Percentage Yield (APY). No minimum balances are required unless noted. MMA next to the rates indicate a money market account. Most MMAs have check writing and ATM cards. Online savings accounts usually lack both of these. The top lists include banks and credit unions with broad availability and with minimums of $10K or less. Previous weekly summaries are available for Sept 30th, Sept 23rd, Sept 16th, Sept 9th, Sept 2nd and Aug 26th.
