Bank Deals Weekly Summary for March 31, 2007

Mar 31, 2007 - 4:42 PM by Ken Tumin

There weren't many changes in savings account rates this week. Most rate changes were on CD rates, and unfortunately, some of the best rates tended to fall. The rate of World Savings' 10-month internet CD fell from 5.51% to 5.46% APY. Pentagon Federal Credit Union updated its CD rates on Thursday. The 7-year CD rate is down from 6% to 5.50% APY, and the 5-year CD rate fell from 5.74% to 5.50% APY. High CD rates also fell at Netbank, Bank of Internet and Transportation Alliance Bank.

Along with falling CD rates, there were several increases in rates. There wasn't any strong pattern of rate hikes or cuts. Some banks cut rates on one or more terms, but increased rates on others. For example, E-LOAN increased its 6-month CD rate from 5.35% to 5.40% APY and its 5-year CD rate from 5.25% to 5.40% APY, but lowered its 18-month CD rate from 5.40% to 5.35% APY. WaMu dropped its 12-month internet CD rate from 5.40% to 5.10% APY but increased its 6-month CD rate from 5.10% to 5.40% APY.

The best CD rate increase this week was at UmbrellaBank which increased short term rates by 0.15% to 0.35%. The 3, 6, 9 and 12-month yields are now 5.35%, 5.45%, 5.40% and 5.40% APY. One of the best nationally available CD deal continues to be at Northrop Grumman FCU which has a 5.69% APY 6-month CD with a $40K minimum. An association membership can qualify anyone for membership. Navy FCU continues to offer a 6% APY 15-month CD and a 6% APY 7-year CD. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to qualify for Navy FCU membership. You have to have some connection with the Navy.

Premier America started again advertising its 777 CD deal (7% APY 7-month $7K max deposit). This special seems to come and go quickly. I first reported on it when it was being advertised early this month. Soon afterward a reader reported being told it was over. Then early this week, it was being advertised again. So I don't know if it's still available. Membership into an association can make anyone eligible to join (see post).

For savings accounts, HSBC's 6% new money promotion only has about 4 weeks left (see post). If you don't already have an HSBC account, you may be better off with other savings accounts that'll more likely give you a higher rate for the long term. See my discussion on this in my March 17th weekly summary.

I continue to see more new high yield rewards checking accounts pop up around the country. You can get a very high yield in return for regularly using your debit card. I'm keeping a list of these checking accounts at this best checking account post. In addition, I list several high yield checking and money market accounts available nationally.

With April 17th being the deadline for making a 2006 contribution to your IRA (per IRS), many institutions are pushing IRAs with specials. One of the best local specials is at LA Financial Credit Union which is offering a 6.25% APY 13-month IRA CD with a checking account or 5.75% without one. Membership is primarily limited to those in Los Angeles County (see post).

For the list of local deals, refer to the local CD deal section below.

Thanks to all who have helped by leaving comments or sending emails on rate updates. Sorry I can't post on all of your suggestions.

The rates listed below are based on Annual Percentage Yield (APY). No minimum balances are required unless noted. MMA next to the rates indicate a money market account. Most MMAs have check writing and ATM cards. Online savings accounts usually lack both of these. The top lists include banks and credit unions with broad availability and with minimums around $10K or less. Previous weekly summaries are available for Mar 31st, Mar 17th, Mar 10th, Mar 3rd, Feb 24th, Feb 17th, Feb 10th and Feb 3rd.
