$100 Checking Account Bonus at Wachovia in NY/MD/DC/VA

Wachovia is offering a $100 VISA gift card and a free Zagat guide for opening a checking account. It's not listed on Wachovia's website. A reader mentioned seeing it advertised in his local newspaper, and I called Wachovia for additional information. Here's a summary of this deal that I received from the Wachovia rep:

Wachovia's Free Checking Account has the basic components of free checking: no minimum balance requirements, no monthly fees, etc. A reader in a previous post mentioned that Wachovia does a hard credit pull (via Experian). According to the banking representative, checks are not free, however, they are optional. You can just use the free debit card and free online BillPay. Checks cost $18 and up based on style and your location. There is a $25 fee if the account is closed before 6 months. In addition to the hard pull, Wachovia also does a ChexSystem verification.
Those in California still have until June 24 for a $125 checking account bonus (see post).

I just signed up for this deal. It's all as described, except checks are cheaper. They offered me 50 duplicate checks (carbons) for $8, not $18.
If anything does not work out as promised, I'll be back to gripe about it.

I didn't have to wait 6 months for the $100 "gift card" -- they gave me a $100 debit card with $100 credit on it the day I opened the account, plus the Zagat guide!

Has anyone received a mailed gift card yet? They told me 6 weeks, which it's been. Wachovia doesn't know why I don't have mine yet. One CSR had no idea about the promotion and couldn't find any record of it. Eventually I got a CSR who was able to find it: the promo code was apparently RPR1.
