Bank Deals Weekly Summary for June 9, 2007

Jun 10, 2007 - 3:58 PM by Ken Tumin

Quick Link for Rates

The rate environment changed this week. As this CNN article describes, the 10-year T-Bill yield surged to the highest level in 11 months due to global worries about rising interest rates. And as this LA Times article describes, many now think the Fed won't be cutting interest rates this year.

The effect of these changes is already being seen in CD rates at some banks. GMAC Bank raised the rates on all of their long-term CDs from 5.30% to 5.45% APY. Bank of Internet USA also had large rate gains. Their 12-month CD is now 5.45% APY and most of their longer term CDs are 5.46% APY. Other banks which raised their CD rates included UFB Direct, Transportation Alliance Bank, Countrywide, Netbank and ING Direct.

The best CD deals continue to be at credit unions. Western FCU and Northrop Grumman FCU continue to raise their long-term CD rates. For a $40K minimum deposit, their rates range from 5.55% APY for a 12-month CD to 5.97% APY for a 60-month CD. You can be eligible to join both credit unions by joining an association. For more info, see this Western FCU post and this NGFCU post.

There were also big rate increases on long-term CD rates at Self-Help Credit Union (SHCU). Their 5-year CD is now at 5.50% APY. The nice feature about SHCU CDs is that you are allowed to make unlimited additional deposits during the CD term. The minimum deposit is only $500, so this can be a good way to provide some protection against what happened in 2001 when rates fell like a rock. Please see this post for more info on SHCU.

The 12% 12-month CD ($1.2K max) and the 7% 7-month ($7K max) CD specials are still available at Premier America Credit Union for new members who sign up for a checking account with either Direct Deposit, Bill Pay or an auto loan. This is another credit union with easy membership (see post).

Local Deals

One good local deal for those in Virginia is at Langley FCU. They're offering a 9-month CD with a yield up to 6.17% APY (see post).

New Jersey and New York residents can get a 6% APY 5-month CD and a $150 checking account bonus at Valley National Bank (see post).

There are some other CD deals that are not 6%, but are close. Chartway FCU still is offering 5.75% APY 13-month CDs with no-strings attached or 6.51% APY 13-month CD with a bunch of hoops to jump through. Residents in parts of several states can be eligible to join (see post).

Vineyard Bank has a good CD deal for those in Southern California. Vineyard is offering a 5.50% APY 12-month CD with a nice early withdrawal feature (see post).

Thanks to all who have helped by leaving comments or sending emails on rate updates. Sorry I can't post on all of your suggestions.

The rates listed below are based on Annual Percentage Yield (APY). No minimum balances are required unless noted. MMA next to the rates indicate a money market account. Most MMAs have check writing and ATM cards. Online savings accounts usually lack both of these. The top lists include banks and credit unions with broad availability and with minimums around $10K or less. Previous weekly summaries are available for Jun 2nd, May 26th, May 19th, May 12th, May 5th, Apr 28th, Apr 21st and Apr 14th.

Thanks professorb. I've updated the link to the Salem Five post.

About DiscoverBank CDs, I'll add them next week. Do you have any experience with these? Are they easy to open and fund? Thanks.

About Discover Bank CD's. My mohter had several there. Upon her death in July 05 they were the only bank out of about 35 that she had accounts with that refused to let me change the account in any way. They refused to acknowlege the notorized documents I sent repeatedly. So these CD's remained in her trust-which could have complicated taxes for me had they not matured early in the year of O6 before generating too much income. I will never deal with them again.

Was looking for a good place to park a $5,000 Ira for a few years and not have to move this small amount. Found Keydirect is paying 5.5% for 5 years ($2,000 and up, 5.75% for 7 years)
