Bank Deals Weekly Summary for July 7, 2007

Quick Link for Rates

This Fourth of July week was a quiet one for savings account rate changes. Most banks held their rates steady. The best savings account deal remains at FNBO Direct. However, the time that the promotional 6% APY will last is now less than 3 months. If you haven't opened an account at FNBO Direct and prefer a top non-promo rate from a bank with a history of top rates, you may want to consider alternatives that I discussed at the end of HSBC's 6% promo (see post). Three out of the four that I discussed at the start of May are continuing to offer 5.30% APY or better with no or low minimums. These include AmTrustDirect, iGoBanking and GMAC. UFB Direct is still offering 5.31% APY but only in a new account which requires a balance of $10K or more.

Online Savings vs. Reward Checking

The online savings accounts are starting to get competition from the reward checking accounts that are being offered by more and more banks and credit unions. In many of these reward checking accounts you can get a non-promo yield of around 6% APY. The main catch is that they require around 10 debit card transactions (non-ATM) per month. Also, the balances that qualify for the high yield are usually capped at $25K. Another issue is that these have mostly been offered by small banks which require a branch visit. However, this is starting to change. I just posted yesterday on Provident Credit Union's new reward checking account which can be opened online. Also, Provident has easy qualifications for joining. See below for the reward checking accounts that are open to all. To see all of my latest posts on reward checking accounts, see this page, and see this link for a summary of the best checking accounts.

It's still an open question if the high yields on these reward checking accounts can last. The banks are being sold these new checking accounts by vendors who are making the case that these new accounts can be profitable (vendor websites at Strunk & Associates and BancVue).

CD Rates Update

The 5.50% APY seems to be the best CD rate available from the major online banks. Indymac Bank increased the rate on its one-year CD from 5.45% to 5.50% APY this week. E-LOAN increased the rate on its 18-month CD from 5.41% to 5.50% APY. Its 2-year CD remains at 5.50% APY and its 60-month remains at 5.55% APY. Also holding at 5.50% APY are the rates of Ascencia Bank's 1 and 2 year CDs.

The only bank to go much above 5.50% APY is KeyDirect on its long-term CDs. Those rates went up slightly this week. The yields for the 5, 7 and 10 year terms are now 5.60%, 5.75% and 5.90% APY.

Thanks to several credit unions, you can get much better than 5.50% APY on CDs. For credit unions with easy membership, NASA FCU started a new 7-month CD promotion with a yield of 5.65% APY (see post). Navy FCU officially launched their 6% APY 10-month CD. Although this is available nationally, you have to have a Navy connection to qualify for membership (see post). Both Western FCU and Northrop Grumman FCU continue to have very competitive rates on their CDs with minimum deposits of $40K. The long-term rates have fallen some in the last couple of weeks. The top rate is now 5.66% APY on the 60-month term (see my Western FCU post and Northrop Grumman FCU post). For those with large deposits and with a military connection, Air Force FCU has some very competitive CD rates. For a $100K minimum, a yield of 5.75% APY is available on 3 and 5 year terms (see post).

Local CD Deals - Celebrating 7/7/07 with 7% CDs

Several credit unions around the country started CD specials this week that were connected to today's 7/7/07 date. Some have ended today, but several are scheduled to continue into July. The best local CD deal is at Clackamas Community FCU in Oregon which is offering a 7.79% APY 5-month CD. What makes this so good is that there's no maximum deposit (see post). Typically when credit unions or banks offer a CD with a high teaser rate, they limit the amount that can be deposited. If the limit is too low (like $500), it may not even be worth purchasing one. Many that came out this week had a maximum deposit of $7K which makes for a pretty good deal. To see all of these 7% CDs, refer to my local short term CD list below and my 12-to-24 month CD list below. For more local CD deals, refer to my local CD deal section below.

Update on Bonuses

Citibank and Wachovia added new $100 and $50 bonus promotions this week which are basically extensions of what they offered earlier in year. To see all of the latest bank bonuses for savings and checking accounts, refer to my bank bonus page.

Thanks to all who have helped by leaving comments or sending emails on rate updates. Sorry I can't post on all of your suggestions.

The rates listed below are based on Annual Percentage Yield (APY). No minimum balances are required unless noted. MMA next to the rates indicate a money market account. Most MMAs have check writing and ATM cards. Online savings accounts usually lack both of these. The top lists include banks and credit unions with broad availability and with minimums around $10K or less. Previous weekly summaries are available for Jun 30th, Jun 23rd, Jun 16th, Jun 9th, Jun 2nd, May 26th, May 19th and May 12th.
