5.25% 61-Month / 5.25% 18-Month CD at a Michigan CU - Easy Membership (Telcom)
Nov 14, 2007 - 8:51 AM by Ken Tumin
Telcom Credit Union has two special CDs both with a yield of 5.25% APY. One has a term of 18 months and a minimum deposit of $2,500, and the other has a term of 61 months and a minimum deposit of $5,000.
This 61-month special CD has had higher rates in the past (6% in July 2007 and 6.25% in September 2006). Nevertheless, the current 5.25% APY is still very competitive in today's rate environment.
Membership is open to everyone by virtue of a $2 donation to the Salvation Army Bed and Bread Program. Please refer to the credit uinon's how-to-join page for details. Membership requies a minimum $5 deposit in the share savings account. Also, there's a $2 monthly fee if your combined average monthly balance of all deposit accounts is under $500.
Branches are located in Novi, Southfield and Canton, Michigan. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 62236). It has $451.7 million in assets and 41,547 members.

One thing they want is a color copy of your driver's license.
Also, the last round they had for their 6% special was only open to existing members or Michigan residents. It was not offered for new out-of-state deposits.
Since they routinely come out with good specials, opening a CD or savings account now could make you eligible the next time if they are restrictive again.

Thanks for the info. That's a good point about joining this credit union now. You'll more likely be able to take advantage of the next good CD special.

Telcom did an Equifax inquiry on me, just for buying their CD.
