5.35% 13-Month CD at a California CU - easy membership (NuVision)

NuVision Credit Union
NuVision Federal Credit Union is offering a special 5.35% APY 13-month certificate. The minimum deposit is $10,000. It has an add-on feature that allows a one-time additional deposit of at least $1,000 during the term.

I called the credit union about this promotion and was told that it is scheduled to last through November. There's an online application, but this special CD is not listed as an option, but you can open the CD by phone. It can be funded by mailing a check or by requesting a transfer from your NuVision savings or checking account. The early withdrawal penalty is 180 days of interest and there's a 7-day grace period at maturity. I was told there is no hard credit pull when you apply for membership or open an account.

The credit union is still offering a checking account bonus that includes both a $100 credit and an iPod gift. I first reported on this in June. It's still not scheduled to expire until 12/31/07. Unlike the CD, however, I was told that this checking bonus does require a branch visit.

Field of membership includes members of the American Consumer Council. Anyone can join this organization with a $6 membership fee. In the online credit union application, it allows you to select this council for eligibility, and it states: "If you are interested in joining the Council and the credit union, click this option and continue applying for membership." See the site for other ways to be eligible without joining this council. You can be eligible via select employer groups and via immediate family.

Branches are located in the California cities of Huntington Beach, Laguna Hills, Lakewood and Seal Beach. There's also a branch in Mesa, Arizona, but it's only accessible to Boeing employees. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 566). It has $812.1 million in assets and 50,898 members.
