ING Direct Acquires ShareBuilder

POSTED ON BY

ING DIRECT
ING Direct has acquired ShareBuilder, an online broker that offers low cost stock investing along with frequent new account promotions. Here's the press release of the announcement.

ShareBuilder is already listed on ING Direct's product page. In the last year, ING Direct has been on a growth binge in adding new products. From the Internet Archive you can see what their product page looked like a year ago. In addition to ShareBuilder, they've added the Electric Orange checking account and business accounts. And in September, ING Direct acquired the accounts from NetBank after it was closed by the FDIC (see post).

For those who follow brokerage promotion deals, you're probably aware of ShareBuilder's new account promotions. Seems like every other bank or credit union lists some ShareBuilder bonus. This FW thread has a long list of them including those from PenFed, Compass Bank and SunTrust. With the acquisition by ING Direct, it seems likely we'll see some changes.

Thanks to the readers who mentioned this news in emails and comments.

I just received this e-mail:

"Dear John,

ShareBuilder has some exciting news. As of November 15, ShareBuilder has been acquired by ING DIRECT, the nation's largest direct bank with over 5.5 million customers and $75 billion in U.S. assets (part of Netherlands-based ING, NYSE: ING). ING DIRECT shares our vision of helping Americans increase their savings.

ING DIRECT is widely recognized for offering some of the most popular and easy-to-use financial products. Joining the ING DIRECT family will benefit you by providing simple and innovative products and services that can help you meet your saving and investing goals.

Rest assured there have been no changes made to your Pentagon ShareBuilder account. All of the easy account maintenance, trading tools and customer service functions you are accustomed to will remain the same. The only change you will find is an eventual logo and color change as ShareBuilder begins to adopt ING DIRECT's signature Orange color. You can also continue to use the same account number, login and password, and can access your account anytime through the co-branded ShareBuilder website.

We look forward to sharing more information with you over the coming months. If you have any questions, we invite you to contact us at 1-866-SHRBLDR (1-866-747-2537).

The ShareBuilder team is really excited by what this news means for you!

Best regards,
