Bank Deals Weekly Summary for January 5, 2008

Quick Link for Rates, Recap of this week's posts

The New Year started off with many banks cutting savings account and CD rates. Some big drops in savings account rates this week occurred at AmboyDirect (4.55% APY, was 4.75% APY), at Bank of America's Dow Money Market Savings (top tier 4.41% APY, was 4.71% APY), Zions' Deseret Money Market (lower tier 4.60% APY, was 4.86% APY), EverBank's intro rate (5.01% APY, was 5.51% APY) and EverBank's standard money market rate (4.26% APY, was 4.51% APY). Smaller savings account rate cuts also occurred at Countrywide, M&T Bank and Capital One.

For CDs, the big disappointment for this week was at Patelco Credit Union which ended their special 5.50% APY 9-month CD today (see post). The good news is that they're now officially federally insured by the NCUA. They still have some good deals (see post). Hopefully, we'll see more CD specials from Patelco this year.

I just found one good CD deal today at Alliant Credit Union which just recently introduced new Jumbo CDs with only a $25K minimum that has a yield of 5.40% APY. Terms range from 12 to 24 months. People can be eligible to join Alliant CU by joining the National PTA (see post).

Another good CD deal that came out this week was at Key Bank. In 6 states they're offering yields of up to 5.50% APY for terms from 25 to 35 months. A lower yield of 5.30% APY is available in 7 other states (see post). Those not in these states, can still get competitive CD rates at Key Bank's online bank, KeyDirect. Unfortunately, KeyDirect just recently lowered most rates for terms under 7 years with a top yield of 5.00% APY for certain terms. They still have very high yields for terms from 7 to 10 years. The top yield is 5.75% APY for a 10-year term.

For those who don't want to lock their money into CDs but still want high yields, the reward checking accounts continue to be a good alternative. Even though many rate cuts are occurring in some of these accounts, they continue to maintain higher rates than most online savings accounts. I reported on a new 6.06% APY reward checking account this week that's available nationwide and that doesn't have a balance cap. It's a small bank that doesn't seem well prepared for a nationwide audience. So I would expect some delays and issues (see post). Many banks and credit unions continue to come out with new reward checking accounts. So you may soon have one of these local to you. I reported on a few more reward checking accounts this week that are available in certain areas of the country. Please see my recap section below for these posts.

Savings and CD rates are dropping fast. So please check with the bank or credit union to make sure the deals that I've posted are still available. If they're not, please leave a comment.

You might want to remove the "Not NCUA insured" qualifier after the listings for Patelco CDs in the 3, 4, and 5 year categories.
