Bank Deals Weekly Summary for January 26, 2008
Jan 27, 2008 - 2:44 PM by Ken Tumin
Quick Link for Rates, Recap of this week's posts
This week we saw the largest one-day federal funds rate cut since the 80's. The 75-basis-point rate cut at the fed's unscheduled Tuesday meeting was a shock. It might have been good news for the stock market, but it's bad news for savers. Most banks quickly responded with major rate cuts. And it looks likely we'll see at least another 25 basis-point-rate cut next Thursday at the fed's regular meeting. So we'll probably see more bank rate cuts in the next few weeks.
There were a few banks that didn't drop their rates. For savings accounts it's likely only a matter of time before those banks make cuts. OneUnited Bank is one that has held steady with the yield on its online savings account. It's still at 5.30% APY. The bank also has a $50 bonus for direct deposit (see post). The savings accounts does have some downsides, so those downsides plus the potential of a large rate cut some time in the near future should be considered before you decide to open it.
There are still two savings account promos which will guarantee a 5-percent-plus yield for the first 3 months. The best now is AmTrustDirect's e-Savings account with a yield of 5.11% APY (see post). EverBank has the other promo for its checking and money market account. EverBank's promo yield is 5.01% APY.
If you want to guarantee a 5-percent-plus yield longer than 3 months, you'll have to open a CD. Unfortunately, 5% CDs are quickly disappearing, but there are still a few left.
Short Term 5-Percent-Plus CDs
TD Ameritrade is still offering a brokered 3-month CD with a yield of 5.30% APY (see post). The new online bank Century Bank Direct still has a 5.01% APY 5-month CD (see post). IndyMac Bank has a 7-month CD special with a yield of 5.00% APY (see post). Note, IndyMac often changes rates early on Mondays.
The only 12-month CD with over a 5% APY is from Zopa which still has a yield of 5.10% APY. Zopa has partnered with six US credit unions which allows these CDs to be federally insured by the NCUA. You'll have to join one of these credit unions if you're not already a member. Many of these credit unions are easy to join (see post).
Long Term 5-Percent-Plus CDs
You'll have to go for a term of 5 years or longer to lock in a 5% or higher yield. Pentagon Federal Credit Union is still offering its 5% APY 5-year CD and 5.25% APY 7-year CD. These rates were a disappointment when these came out in late December, but these look very nice now. KeyDirect is no longer offering its 5.75% 10-year CDs, but you still can get up to 5.05% APY on both its 7 to 10 year terms. Note, these are not available in all states.
[ Update 1/27/08: Rates are dropping fast. Advanta's rate table now shows lower CD rates with the same Feb 2nd date.] I found a new bank this week that still has a 5% APY 5-year CD. It's Advanta Bank Corp. It also has yields in the high 4 percent range for the other CD terms. According to the bank's rate table, these CD rates should remain in effect through Feb 2, 2008. I wrote a review of this bank and CDs in this Thursday post. Unlike many other banks offering high yields, this one has some good financial ratings.
Local CD Deals
You might notice that my local CD list below is much shorter than in the past. I went through all of the posts since December and removed those banks that had dropped their rates. I only kept the banks and credit unions on the list which are still listing the high rates on their websites. Hopefully, their websites are up-to-date. Be sure to call to verify the rates before driving to the bank.
One good local deal that's still available that may actually be available to people from any state is at a Maryland credit union, Money One FCU. It's still offering a 5.25% APY 9-month CD which also has an add-on feature. The credit union has easy membership qualifications, however, joining and opening the CD would have to be done through the mail if you don't live nearby. I think it's likely this special isn't going to last too much longer (see post).
For those in Los Angeles, LA Financial Credit Union is still offering a 13-month special CD with a yield of 5.75% APY (see post).
For the full list of local deals, please see the Local CD section below.
Savings and CD rates are dropping fast. So please check with the bank or credit union to make sure the deals that I've posted are still available. If they're not, please leave a comment.
