New Chase $125 Checking Account Bonus - Update
Feb 3, 2008 - 5:21 PM by Ken Tumin
Chase Bank is again offering $125 for opening its free checking account with direct deposit. However, there's no online promo page (at least none that I'm aware of). A FW member who started this thread found $125 coupons in the moving packets at the post office. Hopefully, similar coupons will be at your local post office. Pictures of these coupons are attached in that thread. However, since each coupon has a unique code, you can't just copy this coupon.
A branch visit is required. The coupon is good through 5/31/2008. The terms seem to be the same as what I posted in this January Chase post.
My Experience
I've had success with my Chase Checking Account. I opened the checking account on December 15th with a $125 bonus coupon and a $25 refer-a-friend coupon. The Chase rep allowed me to stack the bonuses, and he provided the first 50 checks free. I linked this with my GMAC Money Market account and initiated a transfer from GMAC on January 3rd. When I didn't see the bonus appear, I played it safe and also did a real direct deposit. Five days after the direct deposit (Jan 25th), the bonuses were credited to the account. I'm afraid I don't know what triggered the bonus credit.
Below are more details about the bonuses and checking account:
An Extra $25 Bonus
Chase also has a $25 refer-a-friend bonus. When you open the checking account, be sure to ask for the refer-a-friend coupons. I and many readers have reported success with stacking this bonus with the $125 bonus. Feel free to request for referrals in the comments.
Expensive Checks
It has been reported that Chase will automatically charge $22.95 for a checkbook. You can either tell them when you sign up that you don't want checks or you can call Chase after you open the account and cancel the order. In my case, I asked the banking rep about this, and he provided the first 50 checks free.
Direct Deposit
It has been reported by several of my readers that Chase treats transfers initiated from online banks or from PayPal as direct deposits. However, there have been some recent reports that PayPal no longer works. A reader in my last post said a Countrywide transfer did qualify as a direct deposit. In my case, I'm afraid I can't tell if my GMAC transfer or direct deposit triggered the bonus credit.
Hard Credit Pull
I just checked my credit report after I opened this Chase checking account, and I did not receive a hard credit inquiry. I only received a soft pull via Experian. A reader in my last post also didn't receive a hard pull. Others have reported a hard credit pull when you open an account (this temporarily dings your credit score). Refer to this FW thread for more info on this.
Checking Account Details
Some more important info about the free checking account is available at Chase. Without direct deposit, there's a $6/month fee. There's a $2 fee for using non-Chase ATMs (up from $1.50 in November).
Chase Branch Locations
Chase has branches in many states but not all. There are no branches in California. States with Chase branches include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida (Southwest), Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Chase is FDIC insured under JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. (FDIC Certificate # 628).

I think that Chase, which took over the previous Bank of NY customer base, is a horrible bank. My husband and I have had a checking/savings account with the B of NY for years and were treated fairly by phone rep and teller/manager alike. Now that it's Chase, all they seem to do is charge fees, fees, fees. Just found out this morning that they charge 12.00 each time the account is used more than 6 times! I was just charged 70.00 in fees in less than 8 days by the crooks. They gave no notice of their policy and I had never been charged before this for the same type of usage in our savings acount. I am pulling all my money out of Chase for good because we are not going to pay with fee after fee, for the mortgage debacle caused by over zealous lenders!!!

Hi,
I amreferring to the comment where you posted "Just found out this morning that they charge 12.00 each time the account is used more than 6 times:...what does this mean? Could you please elaborate?
Thanks..
Anonymous - #17, Monday, March 10, 2008 - 11:07 AM
Regarding the $12 fee on sav acct. Sounds like you got charged the fee because you withdrew more than 6 times during your statement cycle from your SAVINGS acct. This is not a Chase policy, but a Federal Regulation. I refer you to Regulation D for more details. All banks are supposed to adhere to this regulation.

Just so everyone is aware of this...when you open a checking acct w/Chase, they will print out Refer-a-friend coupons for you. You have to realize that when you use one of the codes people are posting on here, you are giving them the $25. Each person has codes linked to them. If you are a current customer and want to refer friends, just go into your local branch and ask your personal banker to print you out some of the coupons. It's great that someone sent a reply to the comment stating Chase is a horrible bank (dated 2/12). First, it has NOTHING to do w/Chase specifically when it comes to getting charged $12 for excess transactions. It's not legal to use your SAVINGS as a checking acct. Seriously, Chase has been one of the only banks who is VERY willing to work with you so you don't get fees. As soon as you see you have a fee, just call the local bank and tell them you want to come in and have a banker review your acct - they will be more than willing to put you in the right acct so you WON'T see any fees.

i just opened up a chase checking account. whatta deal! all they ask you for is the referral code so you can get an extra $25 on top of the $125 with the coupon. they gave me five new referral codes as well. anyone who wants one, just send me an e-mail! it's an awesome deal.
e-mail me at p.renshaw (at) hotmail.com (replace the (at) with a @ symbol). i'll send you a referral code. they expire on 6/27/08 and are good for $25 (both for me and you).
