Update 4/07/08: It has been reported that the bank has ended this promotion early.

Susquehanna Bank has a $150 checking account promotion. A $75 Visa gift card is awarded when you open a free checking account. An additional $25 is added for each of the following: Direct Deposit, Internet Banker with Bill Payment and Visa Check Card. The offer is valid through 4/15/08. According to the bank's CSR, you must live within their market area (parts of PA, MD, NJ and WV). They do allow you to apply online in addition to at a branch. The CSR also said there is no hard credit pull. They only do ChexSystem verification in the application. Please be aware that CSRs are not always correct on this issue.

The free checking account requires a minimum $25 to open. There are no minimum balance requirements or monthly maintenance fees. Internet bill payment is free, and the first order of checks is free.

The bank has been FDIC insured since 1934 (Certificate # 9694).

I actually applied over the phone after asking the CSR if it is ok that I dont live near a branch. She said fine and towards the end of the appl. process checked something with her supervisor (regarding the bonus/reward) and was finally told I have to be living in those states to apply for a checking a/c. Had to cancel my appl. after going through the hoops. In short, YES, you have to living in their market area.

Can you get the promo by applying online? The promo page says ckick the button to apply online, but there is nothing to click on. The regular account opening pages wit the bank allow you to open an account online, ut don't mention the promo.

I just called them, that even you can open online or by phone, you still need to come to a branch to pick up the gift cards.

This is really weird, but this was what he said over the phone.

I actually opened the account online with no problem at all (I live in the Edison NJ area, but not in their service area, I'm in Middlesex County), but I do have to go to the branch for the gift card. Still, for $125, and the nearest branch about an hour away, I figure it's worth it.

Is it really worth $125? The cost of gas for ~120 miles; the cost of your state, federal, and any local taxes need to be accounted. Plus the cost of your time. Their branches' lobby are open generally M-F 9a-5p, Sat 9a-1p; and usually Fri 9a-7p. Drive-up windows M-F 7:30a-7pm. How are you going to access your money? At a non-susquehanna ATM, they charge a fee plus the ATM owner. The only way to avoid Susquehanna's foreign ATM fee and get reimbursed the ATM owner fee is through their current "ATM Freedom" thing -- where you maintain at least $2500 in savings, checking or moneymarket and only "at participating networks". None of their savings have any good interest yields; and dont fall for teaser promotional rates; they dont last long.

I live in Highland Park (very close to Edison) in NJ, >50 miles from the nearest branch. I am still hesitating it is worth or not to travel that much to pick up the gift cards.

debmc, maybe we can go together to pick up the gift cards if you have not done that. :)

well they called me today because i forgot to send them a copy of my driver's license. and when i enquired about the gift card and found out that i had to go to a branch to collect it, i declined for the account to be opened. but because they already deducted the amount from my account, they said they will either look into sending me the giftcard or return me my deposit. will keep you guys posted.
on another note, the bank of america now has a referal program so if you want $25 deposited INTO the account, let me know! Not only that, open a linked savings account and for the first three months, when you use your checking card, they will transfer the rounded value of your purhase to your savings and match it 100%. its 5% after the 3 months.
