4.25% 12-Month / 4.30% 24-Month CD at a VA/NC Credit Union (Call).

POSTED ON BY

Update 3/29/08: The CD rates have fallen. Please check the credit union's website for the latest rates.

Call Federal Credit Union has several competitive rates on its certificates. These include a 4.35% APY 36-month CD, a 4.30% APY 24-month CD, a 4.25% APY 12-month CD and a 4.11% APY 7-month CD. The minimum deposit is $1,000. These are also available in an IRA.

The early withdrawal penalty is 90 days of interest. This is below average for CD terms over 12 months. A small early withdrawal penalty is nice to have when there's concern that inflation will eventually force interest rates to shoot up.

I last reported on this credit union in February when they were offering a 5% CD special.

Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, volunteers or attends school within the city of Richmond, VA or parts of Cabarrus and Rowan Counties, NC. You can also be eligible via Select Employer Groups which includes Philip Morris USA. Please see their Who-Can-Join page for the full details. Membership requires a minimum deposit of $5 in the regular savings account.

Branches are located in the Virginia cities of Richmond, Midlothian, Mechanicsville and in the North Carolina city of Concord. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 15209). It has $240.1 million in assets and 28,765 members.
