Update on Chase Checking Account Bonuses - Up to $225 in Bonuses

POSTED ON BY

Chase Manhattan Bank
Update 5/9/08: There's a new $125 bonus. Please see this post for details.

There's a new $125 bonus page for a Chase checking account with direct deposit. The page allows you to apply online. If you want an additional $25 refer-a-friend bonus, you may need to print the coupon and apply at a branch. The offer is valid through 4/30/08, and remember that these promo pages often end before the expiration date.

$125 Chase promotion page - 4/30/08 expiration

If this $125 page ends, you may want to try this $100 Chase bonus at the below link. This seems to only allow an online application. It's available through May 31, 2008.

$100 Chase promotion page - 5/31/08 expiration

No-Checks Option Now in Online Application

I went through the first part of these online applications, and I noticed two new things. On the third page, you should see confirmation about the bonus. This should look like the following:
You're applying for:

* Chase Free CheckingSM with Direct Deposit

Potential Rewards: $125 Cash Bonus What's this?

At the bottom of this same application page, they allow you to select whether you want to order checks. You can check "No thanks, I don't want to order checks." This should prevent you from being charged around $23 for checks. To play safe you may want to follow up with Chase by phone to ensure this recorded. Several readers in the past were charged for checks without their knowledge.

Some of the important common small print of these offers include:
  • $100 minimum opening deposit of new money
  • Chase Free Checking has no monthly service fee when you have a monthly direct deposit.
  • Limit one personal checking account-related reward/premium per customer, per calendar year.
  • The first direct deposit must be completed within 60 calendar days of account opening
  • The cash bonus will be deposited into your new account within 4-8 weeks after the initial direct deposit and is not considered part of the minimum opening balance.
  • Checking account must remain open for a minimum of six months or the reward will be debited from the account at closing.
  • Cash bonus is considered interest and will be reported on IRS Form 1099-INT.

Below are some additional details regarding these Chase Bonuses:

An Extra $25 Refer-a-Friend Bonus

Chase also has a $25 refer-a-friend bonus. When you open the checking account, be sure to ask for the refer-a-friend coupons. I and many readers have reported success with stacking this bonus with the $125 bonus. Feel free to request for referrals in the comments. Many readers have offered referrals at this previous Chase post. If you have referrals to give away, you may want to save copies of the $125 promo page (with the unique code) so you can email people both the $125 coupon (if this promo page disappears) and the $25 refer-a-friend coupon.

Another $75 By Using the Chase Debit Card

Once you have a Chase checking account, you can get another $75 by using the Chase Visa Check Card. You can get 10% cash back (maximum of $75)on all your purchases made through June 15, 2008. Please see this Chase post for more details.

Direct Deposit

It has been reported by several of my readers that Chase treats transfers initiated from online banks or from PayPal as direct deposits. However, there have been some recent reports that PayPal no longer works. A reader in my last post said a Countrywide transfer did qualify as a direct deposit. You might want to try the ACH as soon as you open the account. If you don't receive anything after the first month, you can always add a real direct deposit before the end of the 60 days.

Hard Credit Pull

I checked my credit report after I opened this Chase checking account, and I did not receive a hard credit inquiry. I only received a soft pull via Experian. Perhaps it was due to the fact that I already had a Chase credit card. A reader in my last post also didn't receive a hard pull. One commenter in this previous post mentioned receiving a hard pull via Trans Union. Note, the hard credit pull temporarily dings your credit score.

Checking Account Details

Some more important info about the free checking account is available at Chase. Without direct deposit, there's a $6/month fee. There's a $2 fee for using non-Chase ATMs (up from $1.50 in November).

Chase Branch Locations

Chase has branches in many states but not all. There are no branches in California. States with Chase branches include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida (Southwest), Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Chase is FDIC insured under JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. (FDIC Certificate # 628).

Update 4/23/08: Keep a look out for a $200 bonus for a Chase personal checking account with direct deposit in your mail (not email). I've read reports of $200 targeted offers being received by some people.

Prepare to call and call and call to get your bonus. Chase has never given me a bonus without me hounding them. I have given up on them. The bonus is just not worth the hassle.

I had my bonus within a few days of opening the account, even before my direct deposit landed. I opened in person at a branch, that may make a difference.

Has anyone, NOT a US citizen, applied for a Chase checking a/c online. The moment you click "Resident" it says to call their "International banking division" which is meant for outside the US and obviously do not offer these promitions. I have Chase credit cards but still have difficulty opening a checking a/c online (after I login to my credit card a/c).

I've been successful with direct deposits as little as $5/month - I have always used Paypal for my direct deposits but will probably try to "push" from my ING account in the future. I also set up direct deposits of my sales on half.com.

I still have three $25 referral codes that expire 4/30/08 - email me at tsmyr@earthlink.net. I agree, it's best to open your account at a local branch.

You should be able to save the page to the hard drive using your browser so you can print it out later.

Be careful. The online account opener gives you no notification that you lose the bonus if you deposit less than $100 when opening.

Arguing with their CSRs did not get me anywhere. Now I have a 'free' account with a direct deposit requirement and I can't close it for 90 days without penalty. Frigging giant impersonal banks...

On the plus side, I can still get the $75 for using the Chase debit card.

Quick update: if you got your Chase Check Card recently (since at least April 26), it does not qualify for the $25 for $250 promotion.

Looks like they got saturated with people enrolling and stopped allowing new cards to enroll.

From on-line chat when asked about a minimum for direct deposit.:

You do not have a minimum of a Direct Deposit. As long as you have a Direct Deposit once per month you will be fine.
