Bank Deals Weekly Summary for June 28, 2008

Jun 28, 2008 - 6:03 PM by Ken Tumin

Quick Link for Rates, Recap of this week's posts

As expected the Fed held rates steady on Wednesday. The good news for savers is that this was the first meeting since last August in which the target federal funds rate wasn't cut. Now the question is when will the Fed start raising the rate. The Fed's statement suggests that they may wait more than what had been expected. It did acknowledge the inflation risk, but stated it "expects inflation to moderate later this year and next year."

CD Rates Recap - More 5% Long-Term CDs

It's clear that many banks are anticipating rising rates in the future. This can be seen in the rising CD rates, especially for the longer terms. Five percent CDs are becoming more popular. We now have 8 institutions offering widely available 60-month CDs with APYs of 5%+. The banks increasing rates to 5% this week included M&T Bank, Capital One, E-LOAN and GMAC. Wachovia has the best deal with its 5.25% APY 60-month Featured CD. It also has high rates on many other terms (see post).

For short term CDs, Indymac Bank came out with two short-term CD specials that match 2 of Wachovia's specials. These include a 4.00% APY 6-month CD and a 4.25% APY 12-month CD (see post). Century Bank Direct made some big rate increases on its online CDs. It now has 4 good CD deals which include a 3.76% APY 5-month, 4.02% APY 10-month, 4.11% APY 15-month and 4.20% APY 20-month (see post). Crestmark Bank has the best 3-month CD with a 3.90% APY. It also has some very competitive 6, 9 and 12-month CDs (see post).

Savings Account Rates Recap - 4% Is Disappearing

Unfortunately, rates on savings accounts are not following CD rates. There were a few rate hikes in early June after HSBC Direct launched their 3.50% APY promo. However, the banks with the top yields like Countrywide, Corus Bank and AARP have lowered their rates during this time. Only Alliant Credit Union has a non-promo savings account yield of 4% APY now, and there are rumors that this will fall to 3.75% APY on July 1st.

If you want a 4%+ rate in a liquid account, a reward checking account may be your only choice. I reported on 6 more reward checking accounts this week. Four have yields over 5%.

Two rewards checking accounts at 6% which are available nationwide are missing from your list. These are Citizens Bank in MN and Arizona Bank and Trust.

It has been reported that both are no longer accepting out-of-state applications. Let me know if you've recently been told differently by the banks. Their policies often change. Here are the links to the posts on these reward checking accounts:

Arizona Bank & Trust post and Citizens Bank Minnesota post.

In the face of anticipated ECB rate hikes, Bernanke has little choice but to increase our rates. If he doesn't, the dollar will fall still further and oil prices will increase once again. I am so tired of our government's failure to defend the American dollar I could spit. It is sickening, it is disgusting, it is un-American, and the perps should be took out back behind the shed and shot.

FYI, RateEdge has dropped their rate again, this time to 2.80%. No idea why they're still heading south when rates seem to be bouncing up lately.

Thanks for the RateEdge info. Seems like credit unions on average haven't been keeping up lately with the rates that banks have been offering.
