3.00% Reward Checking Account at a California CU (American River HealthPro)

Update 11/09/09: American River HealthPro CU has merged into SAFE Credit Union. The reward checking account is no longer listed at SAFE CU.

American River HealthPro CU is offering a reward checking account that pays 3.00% APY on balances up to $25,000 (0.15% for above) if the following monthly requirements are met:
  • 12 check card purchases
  • one direct deposit of at least $500
  • 2 bills paid with Bill Pay
If these are not met, the rate falls to 0.15%. There's also a minimum balance of $1,500 to earn interest.

Update 7/04/09: Some important fees to note in the credit union's fee schedule (pdf):
  • $12 fee if above requirements are not met
  • $5.95 fee if Bill Pay is inactive after 2 months
Membership is open to those who live or work in Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer or Yolo county. Please see the credit union's Benefits Page for more details.

Branches are located in the California cities of Rancho Cordova, Carmichael, Sacramento and Roseville. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 68346).

I hope requirements like this don't become a trend. Just more hoops to jump through and ways to keep account holders from meeting requirements...But, it was probably too good to last.

The rate is now 4.25% APY, and 1.69% APY if over $25K. I don't know the effective date of this change.

Top rate has fallen to 4.00% APY. Amounts over $25K only yields 0.25%. I don't see "from your employer" as part of the
$500+ direct deposit requirement.

Top rate for FLEX checking has dropped to 3.5% APY.

On November 1, 2009 the merger of ARH CU and SAFE CU was finalized. "Better services to our members" does not include a 3% APY reward checking account.
