"...balance level cannot decrease from initial funding balance for 60 days to receive bonus."
Sounds like if you put in $30,000 and take out $5,000 before 60 days are up, you lose the whole bonus even though you had $25,000 in the account the whole time.
Better not put in more than the minimum in you initial deposit.

Just to be cautious.
Can this be a scam? Is this a valid bank under FDIC?
The promo code seems to be questionable from a reputable business.
Anonymous - #3, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 10:42 AM
In any case $250 on 25k for 3 months is only 3% APY
Anonymous - #4, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 11:17 AM
last post "In any case $250 on 25k for 3 months is only 3% APY"
My calculation is 4% for the bonus. Don't forget you still getting the 3.31% interest.
Right?

"Can this be a scam? Is this a valid bank under FDIC?"
According to the website linked from the ad:
"WTDirect is a division of Wilmington Trust FSB. Baltimore, Maryland. Member FDIC."
Did you even read the website?
Anonymous - #6, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 12:59 PM
3 months?? I thought it was 2 months... and they'll pay in early November.
rjm (anonymous) - #7, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 1:05 PM
The bonus is 1% of $25k,
But the $25k only has to be in there for 60 days.
I compute regular interest of about $137.50 for the 2 months which is roughly 3.3%.
The bonus, if my math is correct brings this to over 9% annualized on $25k for 2 months. (9.3% ?)
But, Im not a math major.
Someone correct me if Im wrong.
Sounds like a darn good place to park $25k for 60 days.
Im not aware of anything better without risk
Mocirne (anonymous) - #8, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 1:44 PM
Yeah rjm, your math is correct. The only thing I'm wary about is whether there is an "early account closure" fee associated with this. The fine print states the account must be open for 60 days to receive the bonus, but if you close your account the next day, will you be hit with some early closure fee like Chase does with its $125 checking account bonus? I'll have to pore through the fine print and talk to a CSR before I do this, but if all goes well, I'll have to do some 0% credit card balance transfers to fund this.

No min balance requirements; so just leave .01 cents after you receive the bonus even if there is closure fees
Anonymous - #11, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 3:49 PM
I had an account with them in the very beginning, then I closed it.
Today I tried for the $250 bonus and they rejected my application. Their data base has the record of all previous bank customers.
It is a no go for me.
Anonymous - #12, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 5:32 PM
Just did the online application, very easy. I just need to verify the trial deposits (funded via ACH from another financial institution).
Great deal ... 2 month commitment for (effectively) more than 9% APY, then you can move your money elsewhere.
WTDirect is definitely in the FDIC database, and it's 3-stars according to both bauerfinancial.com and bankrate.com.
Anonymous - #13, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 5:55 PM
Has anyone tried to fund this thing by mailing a check?
Anonymous - #14, Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 6:42 PM
Following used the CD calculator at http://www.bankrate.com/brm/calc/cdc/CertDeposit.asp ...
Entries into calculator are:
Initial Deposit: $25,000
Months: 2 (since you need to leave the $25k untouched for 60 days)
Interest Rate: I varied this so as to "reverse engineer" a "match" to the "ending balance"
Interest Method: I used "compounded annually" to keep it simple:
(1) An interest rate of 3.31% produces ending balance of $25,136.05
(2) An interest rate of 9.63% produces ending balance of $25,386.05 (ie: $250 more)
(3) So isn't this a 9.63% APY for 60 days? Sounds pretty dang good to me.

I don't think anyone has any doubts that there is a real bank called Wilmington Trust Company in Delaware.
What people are concerned about is whether this web site that calls itself "WTDirect" is legitimately related to Wilmington Trust Company in Delaware.
For a few bucks, anybody in Nigeria or Russia can put together a web site and write all over it that they are related to some major bank. Remember "Federal Savings LLC" that put up a web site and said that several major banks were "in their portfolio" and raked in tens of millions of dollars before they were shut down?

It's the promo code concerns me. How a legit business today will use such letters in the promo code with its Legal department approval?
Note there's news that "Colorado authorities have added abbreviation "WTF" to the list of letter combinations banned from the state's license plates. ..."

Wilmington Trust Fsb Savings Opening Bonus... what is the 3?
Banking Guy (anonymous) - #25, Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 2:04 PM
I've updated the post with the link to Wilmington Trust FDIC page. I had this in my previous WTDirect post. One nice change is that the FDIC page now includes the wtdirect.com URL.
Sandy (anonymous) - #26, Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 5:50 PM
Thanks for the update on this promotion. I have called them twice and there is NO minimum after the 60 days.
You can fund by check or by ACH. THey pay interest the minute they receive the check.
If you are doing the rewards checking accounts--this will save you the hassle of the 10 debits.
I am opening 2 accounts. one in my name and SS# and one in my husbands so this will save us 20 debits a month for 2 months and then I can easily move the money back to the rewards checking accounts.
Looks like a no brainer to me. It will pay for the electric bill.
I noticed on another website that they felt if they had the 25K they wouldn't need to move money around.
It's the idea of having money working for you instead or while your working.
Regardless of how much money you now have you have to make sure that the money you have is working for you.
Thanks again for this awesome website and to the people that post to it and submit information.
Sandy

This sounded like a good offer, so I jumped at the chance. I can add a bit of information regarding the opening of the account and the initial transfer of funds.
If you decide to use an ACH transfer, you almost certainly will have to verify the funding account via trial deposits. Although immediate verification of your funding account is possible, I learned from one CSR that it is limited to only one or two banks that have a banking agreement with WTDirect. Sorry, she couldn't provide the name of those select banks.
The first CSR I spoke with stated that the trial deposits would take 3 business days to post, but a second CSR said more often, the trial deposits show up the next business day. The transfer of your initial deposit requires another 3 business days, so you're looking at a total of 5 or 6 business days in the worst case scenario. For those of you worried about Labor Day weekend and your funds not earning interest while they transit banking cyberspace, a CSR provided the following tip: The transfer of your opening deposit is initiated as soon as you verify your trial deposits. If those trial deposits don't arrive by Monday or Tuesday of this week, you can wait until Sep. 2 to verify, keeping your funds in your previous account over the long holiday.
Overall, I was impressed with the customer service provided. Both times I called, someone answered the phone within seconds. The CSRs were helpful and knowledgeable.
Anonymous - #29, Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 9:21 PM
If you wait until Sep 2 to verify, you might miss the Sep 5 deadline.
If you verify this Friday, the funds can't be deducted from your remote account until the next business day anyway, so they won't be deducted until Sep 2.
Anonymous - #30, Monday, August 25, 2008 - 2:44 AM
Thank you folks for alerting the days involing trial deposits and ACH.
I will mail a check today instead to avoid potential delays - my original application was to fund transfer my first deposit.
Anonymous - #31, Monday, August 25, 2008 - 7:16 AM
Follow up from last night's posting (Anonymous 6:58 pm)
The trial deposits had already cycled completely (both in and out of my funding account) by 6:30 am Monday, even though I had opened the account at 9 pm Sunday evening. Amazing how fast these banks can credit and debit an account when they want to!
From the WTDirect web site, I was able to confirm the deposits, even though my electronic banking account with them is not yet completed; that is supposed to take one business day.
After confirming the trial deposits, I received the following message:
Congratulations! Your Trial Deposits were successfully verified. We will fund your account as soon as we finish processing your application.
We will notify you by email when your WTDirect Savings Account opening deposit has been processed.
Now, I'll cross my fingers and hope everything is finished by Friday.
Good luck.
Anonymous - #32, Monday, August 25, 2008 - 7:58 AM
"both in and out of my funding account"? did you mean wtdirect withdraws 2 trial deposits? that's cheap!

Follow up from this morning's posting (Anonymous 5:16 am)
Yep, they took back their trial deposits. Fine with me, it's their money.
I just received my confirmation for the transfer of the opening deposit.
Thank you for opening a WTDirect Savings Account. The initial deposit to your new WTDirect Savings Account was processed and the funds will be in your new account within 3 business days.
Then you can manage your account, transfer funds, and establish recurring fund transfers at www.WTDirect.com. If you haven't set up a User ID, click "Enroll" in the upper right login box and have your Social Security Number, or Tax ID Number, and Account Number available.
If you have questions or would like to speak with a Client Care Representative, please email us at clientcare@wtdirect.com or call 1-800-WTDIRECT (800-983-4732) Monday through Friday, 7AM-11PM, Saturday, 8AM-1PM, and Sunday, 5PM-11PM ET.

IF my wife and I both open individual accounts can each of us be qualified for the bonus?
Anonymous - #35, Monday, August 25, 2008 - 11:08 AM
Remember, if they take back the trial deposits, that counts as two more withdrawals from your funding account. If you use a savings account that only allows six withdrawals per month, you'll use up three withdrawals in order to open this account!
Anonymous - #36, Monday, August 25, 2008 - 12:41 PM
I just called. I spoke to a very pleasant and seemingly knowledgable CSR who advised me of the following:
1- If I open a joint account with my wife under my social security number, and she opens an account with me under her social security number, BOTH ACCOUNTS are eligible for the bonus.
2- If I use the trial deposit method to fund the accounts from an external account, there shouldn't be a concern about everything being effectuated by the9/5 deadline because an new account is considered open as soon as it is approved, which is generally one business day after the application is submitted.
Since I naturally intend to verify the trial deposits as soon as it hits my external account, I didn't inquire how much time they give for that.

Anonymous - #40, Monday, August 25, 2008 - 7:49 PM
I just called this afternoon also, and the promo is no longer available. I asked how long it was up for and the response was only a few days. Apparently the response was very strong and they raised all the funds they intended to and then stopped it cold. The CSR indicated that another promo is in the works, but the specifics are not yet known. Check back later to see if another promo surfaces.
Thanks.

Suggestion: How about putting in each headline:"National" or "Local" so the reader doesn't need to scroll down each article to see if it applies to him/her. Otherwise keep up the good work!
Kate (anonymous) - #43, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 7:36 AM
I also noticed this morning that the promotion ended. The page had said it would be good through September 5, and I had been waiting for some funds transfers to go through for funding my account, so I waited. I am not pleased about this.
Anonymous - #44, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 10:44 AM
I'm with kate about being unhappy with them ending the deal all of a sudden as it was my understanding the deal was to last until 9/5/08. I too needed to move money in order to fund ACH in order to open this account and now I have moved the money and the deal is gone. Some banks cannot be trusted. Don't know how many new accounts they got but I know one they are not going to get now. It will take a hell of a deal to get me to ever deal with them.
Anonymous - #45, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 10:58 AM
First, due diligence requires reading the fine print of any offer, be it from a bank or any entity. This offer, like virtually all others has a disclaimer saying the offer can be changed or terminated at any time without notice.
Second, I also did not have the funds available to transfer yesterday morning, so I called and was told that if my application was submitted while the offer was in effect, with the promo code, as long as the funding was received by 9/5, the expiration date at the time, the promotion would be honored. So I submitted my application yesterday and initiated my funding today. I verified with three CSR's this morning that the promotion would be honored for my account.
Anonymous - #46, Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 8:15 AM
Posting of initial deposit on your WTD account page takes 6 business days. 3 business days for any transfer plus 3 business days for initial deposit.
WTD claims interest earned after initial three days.
Very confusing.
WTD should include this info in there initial deposit email and account opening info
Anonymous - #47, Friday, August 29, 2008 - 7:05 AM
Follow up from previous posts (last one, Anonymous 7:27 am, August 25, 2008)
This morning, my "Current Balance" includes the full amount of my opening deposit, while my "Available Balance" is $0. FYI, I verified my account on 8/25/2008 and my transaction history lists 8/25/2008 as the transfer date for my opening deposit; the deposit date is listed as 8/28/2008.
As for availability of funds, I found the following in the new account documents:
Electronic Deposits:
a) Initial deposits (this applies to all deposits made on the same day as your initial deposit): If your initial deposit is made from funds from an account with Wilmington Trust Company or Wilmington Trust of Pennsylvania, or from another account you have with Wilmington Trust FSB, the initial deposit will be subject to a three-day hold, and the funds will not be available for transfer or withdrawal until the fourth day following the receipt of the funds in your WTDirect account.
If your initial deposit is made from an account with another U.S. chartered financial institution, the initial deposit will be subject to a seven-day hold, and the funds will not be available for transfer or withdrawal until the eighth day following the receipt of the funds in your WTDirect account.
b) Subsequent deposits made to your account: Subsequent deposits made from any account you have with Wilmington Trust Company, Wilmington Trust of Pennsylvania and Wilmington Trust FSB, will be subject to a three-day hold, and the funds will not be available for transfer or withdrawal until the fourth day following the receipt of the funds in your account. Subsequent deposits made from an account you have with any other U.S. chartered financial institution will be available for transfer or withdrawal immediately following our receipt of the funds in your account.
c) Interest Accrual: Interest on amounts deposited into your account will begin to accrue on the date that the funds are received into your account notwithstanding any hold that we place on deposits made to your account.
According to these guidelines, it will be eight more business days until I have access to my opening deposit. This matches what I was told by one of the CSRs who spoke with me before I opened the account.
Anonymous - #48, Friday, August 29, 2008 - 3:22 PM
Remember, in order to receive the bonus associated with the amount of your opening deposit, the balance in the account for 60 days cannot decrease below the amount of the opening deposit. If it does, no bonus!
Anonymous - #49, Friday, August 29, 2008 - 6:19 PM
I mailed in my check on Monday but it has not been recorded in my account as yet. The CSR said it can take 5 to 7 business days to receive something in the mail. What?? The USPS says 3 days is the usual, and that has been my experience as well. I'm a little concerned.
Anonymous - #50, Saturday, August 30, 2008 - 6:22 AM
According to two CSR's I spoke to this past Tuesday, after the promotion was pulled, as long as the application was submitted while the promotion was in effect, the funds can be received as late as 9/5, which was the original expiraiton date.
Anonymous - #51, Saturday, August 30, 2008 - 11:47 AM
I too mailed in my check early Mon. morning. Fri WT says they have not received it yet. Doesn't seem right for USPS. I am concerned also. I called before I mailed the check as I was concerned about the amount of time it says they might take to deposit my check but was told there would be no problem if I mailed it on Mon to recieve the promotion
larkin (anonymous) - #52, Sunday, August 31, 2008 - 9:38 PM
I mailed my check on Monday afternoon from CA. I sent it certified mail. The tracking said it arrived Friday AM. I spoke to a CSR Saturday AM. She told me it probably missed the Friday mail run, should be deposited Tuesday and showing in my account Wednesday morning.
Anonymous - #53, Monday, September 1, 2008 - 10:11 PM
If the certified mail tracking showed delivery on Friday morning, isn't that the time the recipient signed for it? If so, how could it have missed the Friday mail run?
Sometimes, certified mail can take an extra day to be received. This happens if the recipient does not see the notice left in the box by the post office when he or she picks up the mail and must then bring the notice back to the post office the next day to sign for the certified mail.
I don't think it should usually take more than 3 business days for first class mail to reach its destination across the country. The welcome packet WT Direct sent me took only 2 days to get to me across the country (judging by the postage meter date).
I wonder whether my and other people's checks mailed on Monday got there by Thursday but were not processed and posted to the accounts for one reason or another. Did anyone who mailed a check on Monday get his or her account successfully funded by Friday?
larkin (anonymous) - #54, Tuesday, September 2, 2008 - 10:47 AM
Great, now you have me suspicious :-)
The tracking said the check arrived in Wilmington on Thursday but was not delivered until Friday so three days to get across the country and an extra day for delivery.
In any case, the check still has not been cashed. We'll see what happens next.

Thank you for joining WTDirect. By saving with WTDirect, you've set up a strong foundation for savings growth in these tumultuous times.
To add to your savings, we will soon deposit the new client cash bonus from our recent promotion directly into your WTDirect account. While it may be tempting to use this bonus or some of your savings for other things, we've come up with a way to help you earn even more if you keep your savings with WTDirect.
Instead of our standard rate, which is already in the top 1% of all U.S. banks, we're offering to bump up your interest rate for the next 4 months by another half percent - currently, that's a promotional interest rate of 3.76%, and a full-year blended APY of 3.48%*.
To take advantage of this excellent offer, simply click on the button that says "Yes, I want more."
At WTDirect, that's what you'll get - more. More savings. More interest. More personal attention.
If we can do more, please don't hesitate to contact us. Send us an email at ClientCare@WTDirect.com or call us at 1-800-WTDirect (1-800-983-4732). Representatives are available Monday through Friday 7am to 11pm, Saturday 8am to 1pm, and Sunday 5pm to 11pm ET.
Save with ConfidenceSM
*Annual Percentage Yield. APY is variable and is effective as of 11/1/08 and may change at any time. Promotion available on balances of at least $10,000. Promotion available to email recipients only; may not be transferred. The promotion period is December 1, 2008 through March 31, 2009. Client must opt-in by selecting "Yes" button on or before November 30, 2008 in order to receive promotional interest rate for full 4-month period.

I got the same e-mail. But I thought it was very odd that the e-mail came from WTDirect at yahoo.com (rather then something at wtdirect.com. Almost makes me afraid to click on the link.

FYI
I called WTDirect and confirmed that the email is authentic.
More importantly, the "Yes, I want more" button in my email was a dud, i.e. it was just a picture without a link. Nothing happened when I moved over the button.
I called WTDirect again, and they said they are experiencing technical difficulties with some of the emails they sent out. They took my name and account number, and promised to get back to me with either a phone call or a second email.
Did the button work for anyone?

I got the email and clicked the button. A new window popped up saying "Thank you for responding.
You have been successfully enrolled." Anyone got the same msg after clicking?

My email said nothing about Yahoo. It simply said unknownsender@unknowndomain and the subject was WithWTDirect. It pays to be nice. I'll click on the "Yes I want more" button after my $250 posts to my account. You have until Nov. 30 to get it. I also called to verify. Its legit

i log in and it still shows 3.31
Dan The Man (anonymous) - #66, Monday, November 10, 2008 - 9:46 AM
If you read the small print in the email the higher rate starts 12/01/08 and runs till 3/31/09. (Four months)The new rate will show up around the 2nd week of December in your account. That's what they told me.

The APY on the WTDirect savings account has just been lowered to 3.06%.
Anonymous - #68, Sunday, November 16, 2008 - 9:35 PM
There is no free lunch at WTDirect. They are selling us 4-5 month CD at 3.5% interest, disguised as savings. On Nov. 12th they lowered the rate to 3.06% until Dec. 1st. If you have average 25K with WTDirect, you are loosing money. The bonus you just received, is being taken back, dollar by dollar. Do some calculations and you will see that the bonus received will disappear by March 31st by leaving your money there.

are 3 months long enough to close the account to avoid early closure fee? TIA

Where are your calculations?
I don't come up with the bonus being taken back month after month.
For those that stay, we're getting an extra 0.50% for 4-months from December through March. That should be 3.56% APY based upon today's rate of 3.06% (Granted, not as nice as the 3.31% we all started at.)
Any suggestions on where to move WTDirect Savings money and keep it liquid and earning this rate (w/o the hoops to jump through that are involved with the other high interest paying liquid accounts)?
Thanks in advance for your response.

Example on interest lost:
$25000 @ 5%/y comes to $104.1 per month
$25000 @ 3%/y comes to 62.5 per month
Just for one month the loss is $42.
Now do the calculations for the next 4 months earning 3.5% instead of 5% and you will see the bonus evaporated.

I just checked my account and it shows the new rate. 3.56%. Ya lose nothing. Non-Bonus customers are receiving 3.06%. I got $250 free and I have one of the higher interest rates available for a savings acct. Where's the bitch. There is none. You are not obligated to leave your money in this account

Rate has dropped their rate a 1/4 $% point from 3.06% to 2.81% APY.
For those of us who are getting the .5% bonus that WTDirect offered back in DEC, we're now down to 3.31%
Looks like it's time to move out of WTDirect.
See ya next time WTDirect!
;-)

In two weeks, they lowered their rate from 3.06% to 2.51%.
So much for those getting the 1/2 point bonus!

WTDirect has dropped their rate Again!!!
This is becoming a "every two weeks" event for WTDirect.
The rate has now dropped from 2.51% to 2.16%.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Recent Rate History for WTDirect:
12/06/08 - 3.06%
01/21/09 - 2.81%
02/05/09 - 2.51%
02/19/09 - 2.16%
Even with the .50% bonus some of us are getting till 3/31, it's now time to pull the rip cord on this bank and find another LZ for our money!
I'm glad I don't own stock in WL!
That's an even bigger horror story!

Thank you for saving with WTDirect. Effective December 2, 2009, we will be implementing a number of changes to your WTDirect Savings Account, as follows:
All clients will begin receiving email notification when their monthly or quarterly statement has been posted within Online Banking. We will no longer be providing paper statements unless you specifically request to receive paper statements and pay a $10 monthly fee. Of course, you'll still be able to view and print the past year of statements within "Other Services."
We will no longer accept Money Orders that you send to us for deposit into your account. But you'll still be able to continue to make deposits by using our website to transfer funds from other accounts, by mailing us a check or by wiring funds to us. Any money orders that we receive will be returned.
Our new Next-Day Transfer Service will be available to qualified clients, subject to a $2 fee for inbound transfers and a $10 fee for outbound transfers. You will know you're qualified when the Next-Day Transfer option becomes enabled for you within Online Banking.
You will be able to name a charity or other non-profit organization (as recognized by the Internal Revenue Service) as the beneficiary if you have (or wish to establish) a Totten Trust (also called Payable upon Death) account. Of course, alternatively, you will continue to be able to name up to three individual beneficiaries.
If you decide to close your account by transferring out your balance before accrued interest is posted to your account for that statement period, you will forfeit the interest for that period, unless you call us in advance of closing your account so that we can post the accrued interest to your account before you transfer out the balance.
In addition to the fees noted above, we are instituting the following fee changes:
Excessive Withdrawal Fee (for exceeding the 6 withdrawal monthly limit)
10.00
Overdraft (per item)
35.00
Return of Account Debit (per item)
35.00
Return of Deposited/Cashed Item (per item)
35.00
Treasurer's Check
25.00
Incoming Domestic Wire Transfer
0.00
Outgoing Domestic Wire Transfer
30.00
All of the above changes have been incorporated into The WTDirect Savings Account Agreement and Disclosures, Arbitration Agreement, and Privacy Policy Notice.
If you have any questions about these changes or this document, please contact us at ClientCare@WTDirect.com or 1-800-WTDirect (1-800-983-4732) Monday through Friday 7am to 11pm, Saturday 8am to 1pm, and Sunday 5pm to 11pm ET.
We appreciate the opportunity to serve you.
