Bank Deals Weekly Summary for August 30, 2008

Aug 30, 2008 - 4:28 PM by Ken Tumin

Quick Link for Rates, Recap of this week's posts

There was another bank failure yesterday. Regulators closed Integrity Bank of Alpharetta, Georgia, and the FDIC arranged for it to be acquired by Regions Bank. I've reported on several CD deals at Integrity Bank in the last year. The good news is that all deposits will be transfered to Regions, including all uninsured deposits. So no depositor should lose any money. In addition, Regions Bank has agreed to allow Integrity CDs be continued to maturity without any rate changes. However, depositors still have the choice to close the CD without an early withdrawal penalty (see post).

CD Rates

WaMu's 5% 12-month CDs didn't last long. The yield is back down to 4.50% APY. I wouldn't be surprised if we see similar deals from other banks in the future weeks as banks struggle to raise fresh funds (see post). The best nationwide 12-month CD deal is now at Corus Bank which is offering a yield of 4.75% APY. It also has the best bank 6-month CD with a yield of 4.25% APY (see post).

The FDIC appears to want to keep deposits at IndyMac Federal Bank so it can remain attractive to a future buyer. Many readers reported being able to get IndyMac to match WaMu's 5% CD. With that deal being over, you may want to see if they'll match Corus Bank's CDs. Readers have also reported success having IndyMac match past local deals.

Savings and Money Market Accounts

This was a quiet week for savings accounts. There weren't many rate changes. The only significant rate increase was at BankUnited which joined the group of 3.75% savings accounts. However, there are many other savings accounts to choose from which also have a 3.75% APY but are more customer friendly (see post). Below is the small list of rate changes for this week:

Rate Hikes:
  • BankUnited - 3.75% APY (was 3.55%)
  • Venture Bank Direct - 3.30% APY (new)

Rate Drops:
  • UFB Direct - 2.50% APY (was 2.85%)
Reward Checking Accounts

I reported on three more reward checking accounts this week (see below). However, we'll likely be losing one. Integrity Bank had been offering a 5% reward checking account. Now with Regions taking over the accounts, I doubt they'll keep it. One of the new reward checking accounts this week has a yield of 6.01% APY for balances up to $25K. The other two have yields of around 5% which is more typical these days. The best deal for reward checking accounts continues to be at MidWest America Credit Union which still offers a yield of 7.01% APY for balances up to $25K (see post).

Is that Premier America CU 7-month still good? Your link works, but I can't find it on their website.

Thanks for noting this. I just sent them an email asking about this.

That's one of the risks of deep linking. Often the institutions don't remove an old page. Instead they just remove the link to it from their website. They forget that it can get linked by websites like my site and by Google.
