National City Raises Checking Account Bonus to $200

POSTED ON BY

National City Bank just increased the bonus amount of its latest checking account promotion from $150 to $200. It has also extended the promotion to last through 10/31/08. The promotion page is located at www.nationalcity.com/cash. It's an online-only promotion. Some of the important details of the offer include:
  • Open any new personal checking account online by 10/31/2008 with a minimum $50
  • Requires direct deposit of at least $250 and a Visa Check Card issued with issued within 60 days of account opening
  • Limit of one bonus per household and available only to households without an existing National City checking account
  • $200 bonus will be credited to your account within 60 days after all conditions have been met
  • $200 credit is subject to 1099 reporting
When I first reported on this bonus last week, I asked the banking representative a few questions via the online chat. According to the rep, there is no hard credit inquiry in the application. They just use ChexSystem. It is available for all of their checking accounts which includes their Free Checking which has no minimum balance requirements or maintenance fees.

According to the banking rep, this promotion is limited to those who reside in states where National City has branches. Branches are located in FL, IN, IL, KY, MI, MO, OH, PA and WI. This is now also stated at the bottom of the promotion page.

National City has also been offering some very good deals on CDs (see post). Once you open this checking account, you should qualify for the extra 25 basis points on the CDs.

National City Bank is a member FDIC (FDIC Certificate # 6557).

Thanks to the reader who commented on this promotion change.

Sweet. I'm glad I got lazy over the weekend and didn't open one up. Thanks for the heads up Ken!

What is a valid direct deposit?

Can I just make a ACH from another bank?

Thanks

Hey, they're willing to give you $200 here. Why not do a REAL direct deposit, like they obviously intend?

Probably because that person, like me, is self-employed and can't do a 'real' "direct deposit".
Think before you post.

you: OK, To get this bonus it takes a ACH Direct Deposit of $250 or more correct?

you: takes an ACH

Katie: yes that is correct. You need to make that deposit within the first 60 days of opening the account

you: OK, I checked with my employer and they won't split my direct deposit up anymore... If I split it thru an outside bank to bank transfer and its ACH will that be sufficient?

Katie: yes, that will work

Katie: any type of ACH will work

Direct from National City Customer Service

Is an online transfer from Etrade or ING considered ACH?

Bummer. They only allow me to make my initial deposit via another National City account, mail, or at the branch.

I think the security was asking me questions about my grandfather that I had no idea. I hope that doesn't come back to bite my application.

The revised promo has to be a direct deposit via switch service, so a regular ACH would not work.

Look like National City ****ed me...I opened an account on 10/31/08...the deposit came through a couple weeks later which apparently made me inelgible for the promo. Looks like they will squeeze every penny out of you and **** you good.
