Bank Deals Weekly Summary for November 29, 2008

Nov 29, 2008 - 4:53 PM by Ken Tumin

Quick Link for Rates, Recap of this week's posts

With the Citigroup rescue and the stock market rally, the financial world seemed to be in better shape for this holiday week. Also, there were no bank failures. The FDIC released its third quarter report on the banking industry on Tuesday. The number of problem banks grew from 117 to 171 (see post). The OTS and FDIC have also publicly released cease and desist orders, and two banks with well-known internet divisions received these. AmTrust Bank received one from the OTS, and OneUnited Bank received one from the FDIC.

Savings Account Rates

Even though there was less financial turmoil this week, there was no slow down in bank rate cuts. Not only were there many savings account rate cuts, CD rates for both short and long terms were cut at several banks including Capital One, Discover and GMAC Bank. The only positive note this week was at Savings Square which raised its online savings account rate from 3.05% to 3.60% APY (see post).

Below is the list of savings account rate changes for this week. The full list of savings account rates is farther down.

Rate Hikes:
  1. Savings Square - 3.60% APY (was 3.05%)

Rate Drops:
  1. Broadway Federal Bank - 4.08% APY (was 5.13%)
  2. Venture Direct - 3.60% APY (was 3.80%)
  3. National City MMA 6-mo promo - 3.25% APY (was 3.75%)
  4. Discover MMA - 3.14% APY / 3.25% APY $50K+ (was 3.25%/3.35%)
  5. Citibank USA - 2.75% APY (was 3%)
  6. Countrywide Savingslink - 2.65% APY / 2.75% APY $50K+ (was 2.90%/3%)
  7. VirtualBank - 2.02% APY / 3.20% $50K+ (was 2.28%/3.30%)
Alliant Credit Union is scheduled to reduce its savings account rate from 3.75% to 3.50% APY on Monday, December 1st.

Nationwide Certificate of Deposit Rates

Like savings account rates, CD rates also trended down this week. Cuts were both on short and long term CDs. We may soon see the end of 4% 6-month CDs and 5% 60-month CDs. The only bank now with a 6-month CD yield above 4% is State Bank of India. There are still several banks offering 60-month CD yields at or above 5% APY, but rates have fallen. Wachovia has long been offering a Featured 5% 60-month CD, but I received notice today from a Wachovia rep that this is scheduled to end at the end of day on 12/02/08.

We may see many rate cuts from credit unions next week with the new month. Pentagon Federal Credit Union is scheduled to reduce the yield on its 3, 4, 5 and 7-year CDs from 5% to 4.75% APY. I've been told that if you open the PenFed CD online and fund it with an ACH transfer, you should still be able to open the 5% CD through Sunday (see post).

There continues to be some good CD deals available nationwide, and these are listed below. The full list of nationwide CD rates is farther down.
  1. 4.01% APY 5-mo / 4.27% 10-mo CD at Century Bank Direct (account review)
  2. 4.15% 9-mo / 4.30% 15-mo CD at iGObanking.com (account review)
  3. 4.36% 12-mo CD & $25 bonus for new E-LOAN customers (account review)
  4. 4.50% 12-mo CD at Delta Community Credit Union (account review)
  5. 4.50% 16-mo CD at Digital Credit Union (account review)
  6. 4.70% 24-mo CD at Credit Union of Georgia (account review)

Note, credit unions often change rates at the start of each month. So many of these may end on Monday.
