Update 1/09/09: The CD rates have fallen. Please refer to the credit union's website for the latest rates.
San Antonio Federal Credit Union (SACU) has some competitive certificate rates. These include a 3.75% APY 6-month certificate with a minimum deposit of $10,000 and a 4.15% APY 18-month certificate with a minimum of $1,000. The 6-month certificate has a yield of 3.70% APY for a $1,000 minimum and a yield of 3.80% APY for a $90,000 minimum. These are also available as an IRA certificate. These rates are listed at the credit union's rate table as of 1/06/09.
The credit union is still offering a high yield reward checking account, but the yield has fallen from 6.01% to 4.00% APY. I have more info on this reward checking account in this September post.
Membership is open to those who work for government or financial institutions in San Antonio or those in college in San Antonio. You can also be eligible via Select Employer Groups in San Antonio and in Houston and via family. People who live in Houston and are members of a parish in the Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston are also eligible. Please refer to their membership application page for more details. Membership requires a minimum $5 deposit into the share savings account.
Branches are located in both Houston and San Antonio. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 24382). It's a large credit union with $2.7 billion in assets and 248,503 members.

I've seen some great yields on www.checkingfinder.com. The key is to find community banks/credit unions that offer REWARDChecking accounts.
