0.88% Reward Checking Account at The Bank of Georgia

POSTED ON BY

The Bank of Georgia
Update 11/12/09: The top rate has plummeted to 0.88% APY. Refer to the bottom of the post for the rate history.

The Bank of Georgia is offering a rewards checking account that pays 0.88% APY on balances up to $25,000 (0.88% for above) and refunds ATM fees nationwide if the following monthly requirements are met:
  • 10 check card purchases
  • one direct deposit or automatic payment
  • receive statements electronically
If these are not met, the rate falls to 0.25%. Minimum initial deposit is $100. There are no monthly service fees and no minimum balance requirements.

There's an online application, but a branch visit appears to be required to complete the account opening process. Branches are located 10 to 30 miles southwest of Atlanta in the cities of Peachtree City, Fayetteville, Newnan, Tyrone, Sharpsburg and Fairburn.

The bank has been FDIC insured since 2000 (FDIC Certificate # 35259).

Easy to open! Their in-Kroger supermarket branch open 9-7 Mon-Sat, and they gave me first box of checks free (unusual with reward checking accounts).

Clean chex required as well as hard pull with 620 or better.

According to their Check/ATM Card webpage (http://www.bankofgeorgia.com/2725/mirror/p_debt.htm), you can't use your debit card in California or New York. Plus, several other countries without calling their customer service rep first.

Never heard of not being able to use your debit card in the United States.

I was mad at them when I checked my balance today, to see that the rate was listed at 3.94 as of 9/11 (4.01 APY); but to their credit, they did hold the 5.25% for a full year, and it is .01% better than the other Atlanta bank with rewards checking (Brookhaven Bnk). Am about to open a 2nd account, as I have over $25k in savings and maintaining multiple accounts is easy within their website, not even requiring a trip to the bank. Otherwise, Brookhaven Bank would be the logical choice since they pay 4% APY on $50k.

If I read the revamped website correctly, they are effectively shutting down their Reward Checking offering much like Charter Bank and Memphis Area Teachers CU. First two tiers are 0.88% APY. BIG DROP!!

I closed my account and took my money across the street. Charter Bank offers 5.01%, plus free toolset gift plus debit and checkbook buybacks.
