$75 Checking Account Bonus at PNC & National City

Mar 29, 2009 - 4:12 PM by Ken Tumin

PNC Bank, National Association
Update 3/29/09: This PNC promotion page lists the expiration date as 4/04/09.

Both PNC Bank and National City have checking account promotions in which you can earn $75. Since National City is now part of PNC, both promotions exclude existing National City or PNC checking customers.

Here's the PNC promotional page. The important features of the promotion include:
  • Earn up to $75
  • Open a new checking account by 3/28/09
  • Free checking qualifies
  • $1 is paid for each debit card purchase (non PIN-based) and online bill payment made through 5/31/09
  • Must not have an existing PNC Bank or National City checking account
Free Checking qualifies for this promo. This requires a minimum $25 initial deposit. It has no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements. Bill Pay is free. A commenter in the last post mentioned that there's a closure fee if closed within 6 months. PNC's new Virtual Wallet checking/savings account also qualifies for this bonus (see review).

It appears that this promotion is available to people in any state. I've received conflicting info on this in the past, so you may want to call and confirm. I've been told that you can also apply for this promotion over the phone. PNC Branches are located in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Virginia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

Here's the National City promotional page. The important features of the promotion include:
  • Earn a $75 Visa Gift Card
  • Open checking account with a minimum of $50 by 3/31/09
  • Set up direct deposit of your entire paycheck (of at least $250) into your account within first 60 days
  • Make at least 10 check card purchases within first 60 days
  • Online applications for a checking account are limited to residents of FL, IL, IN, KY, MI, MO, OH, PA and WI.
  • Must not have an existing PNC Bank or National City checking account

According to this Pittsburg Tribune article, PNC Bank expects to convert all National City Bank branches it acquired to PNC branches by mid-2010. PNC acquired National City on October 24, 2008. PNC Bank is FDIC insured (FDIC Certificate # 6384).

Credit for these finds goes to this iBankDesign thread and this FW thread.
