Bank Deals Weekly Summary for April 4, 2009

Apr 4, 2009 - 4:53 PM by Ken Tumin

Hot Deals, Quick Link for Rates, Recap of this week's posts

This was a quiet week for banking news. No banks were seized yesterday. Interest rates on savings, checking accounts and CDs continued to drop. Most cuts came from liquid accounts and short-term CDs. I noticed this trend last month, and it appears to be continuing. This is likely some recognition that we'll be seeing rising inflation within the next couple of years.

Savings Account Rates

Last Saturday I noted that the savings account rate cuts were slowing. I'm afraid there's no trend. Several banks and credit unions cut their rate this week. The top rate now on my list is 3.10% APY for balances up to $35,000 (1.65% for above). This is being offered by the internet divisions of three Oklahoma banks which are all owned by the same family. Redneck Bank is one of the three which may appeal to fans of Jeff Foxworthy. The other two are AmericaNet Bank and Evantage Bank (see post). In addition to the money market account, these banks also offer a reward checking account that pays 5.25% APY up to $10,000. Instead of cutting rates, the banks recently implemented these $35K and $10K rate tiers. These are small banks that have been getting a lot of publicity. So I wouldn't count on these being rate leaders for the long term.

More online savings account rates fell below 2% this week. Some of the banks on this list include EverBank, GMAC Bank, Amboy Direct, FNBO Direct and WTDirect. With rate cuts continuing, it may seem hopeless to switch now just for what may be a temporary hike in interest rates. Just remember that this is what banks are hoping people will think. Competition is an important factor that is preventing rates from falling to near zero percent. The more we are willing to move our money, the more competition there will be.

Below is the list of rate cuts that have occurred this week.

Certificate of Deposit Rates

As expected, several major credit unions slashed their CD rates at the start of the month. One nice surprise was Pentagon Federal Credit Union which kept CD rates unchanged. PenFed's long-term CDs are now on top of my lists.

There were more attractive CD specials this week from banks that cater to the Korean-American community. There are now three of these banks offering top short-term CD rates, and the CDs also include various liquid features such as allowing additional deposits. I'm not sure if these banks are having a rate war, but depositors of any ethnic background can benefit from this. All of these banks are FDIC insured. To see these CD specials, refer to my local CD deals below.

Refer to the list below for a few of the best nationwide CD deals. The full list of nationwide CD rates is farther down.

Reward Checking Accounts

There were a few nationwide reward checking accounts that either cut rates this week or announced rate cuts in the coming weeks. Community Bank of Pleasant Hill slashed its rate from 5.01% to 3.01% APY. Charter Bank announced it'll be cutting its rates from 5.01% to 4.01% APY starting May 1st, and West Bank not only announced that they'll be cutting its rate, but it's also restricting new accounts to residents of Iowa. West Bank's reward checking account was especially attractive. Not only did it have a 5% APY, it also had one of the best balance caps with balances up to $50K qualifying for the top rate.

For those looking for a reward checking account with a $50K balance cap, you might want to consider First Arkansas Bank and Trust. Its reward checking rate is a little low at 4.44% APY for balances up to $50K. However, this rate has held since February 2008 (see post).

I posted on 5 new reward checking accounts this week with 4 of the 5 accounts with rates of 4% APY or higher (see below). For my full list of reward checking accounts around the nation, please refer to my High Yield Checking website. For reward checking accounts available nationally, please refer to my nationwide table.
