2.43% 18-Month CD & 2.78% 24-Month CD at First National Bank in Texas - Local Only

First National Bank is offering three competitive CD rates: 2.20% APY for 13 months, 2.43% APY for 18 months and 2.78% APY for 24 months. Minimum deposit is $1,000. Higher rates are available for a $100,000 minimum. These include a 2.25% APY for 13 months, 2.50% APY for 18 months and 2.85% APY for 24 months. These rates are not listed at the bank's website. A reader emailed me news of this, and I just confirmed with one of their branch offices that these rates are still available as of 10/20/09. The CSR didn't know how much longer it would last.

A branch visit is required to open an account. These CD rates appears to be available at all of their branches, but I recommend calling your local branch to confirm. I've confirmed these rates in Austin and Houston. Branches are also located in the Texas cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Laredo and Edinburg.

The bank's ratings for safety and soundness are a little weak: 2 stars (problematic) at BauerFinancial and 2 stars (below peer group) at Bankrate.com. Both ratings are based on 6/30/09 financial data. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1934 (FDIC Certificate # 14318).
