Competitive 5-Year CD and IRA CD Rates at Chaffey FCU in California - Limited Membership
Chaffey Federal Credit Union is offering very competitive 5-year CD and IRA CD rates. The best CD rate is 3.49% APY for a $10,000 minimum deposit. The IRA CD rate is even better with a 3.55% APY for a $2,000 minimum deposit. The 3-year CD rates are not as competitive, but they're also a good deal: 2.42% APY 3-year CD with a $10K minimum and 2.52% APY 3-year IRA CD $2K with a minimum. These rates are listed in the credit union's rate pages as of 7/15/2010.
It appears you have to be connected with the school system in the credit union's area to be eligible to become a member. Here' is what the credit union states in its Who Can Join page:
Membership is open to employees, family members and students of schools located in the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valleys, as well as many companies. Membership requires a $10 fee and a minimum balance of $5 in the regular share savings account.
Branches are located in the California cities of Ontario, La Puente, Rancho Cucamonga and Walnut.
The credit union's ratings for safety and soundness are mixed: 4 stars (excellent) at BauerFinancial, 2 stars (below peer group) at Bankrate.com and an overall health score of 4 out of 5 at DepositAccounts.com (see our financial overview of Chaffey FCU). These ratings are based on March 2010 data except for Bankrate which is based on 12/31/09 data. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 16030).

I did contact Chaffey FCU office today about how to join them (live chat with Chaffey FCU representative). It is quite easy. First donate $25.00 to Baldy View Rop vocational program. Second, pay $10.00 membership fee (one time only). Third, deposit $5.00 to open an account. Here is the tough part: You need to make a branch visit in person. Bring with you your State ID (driver license) AND Social Security card. Call them at (909) 986-4552 or visit their website and live-chat with one of their rep's. They're "cool" and will help you with all of your questions.

The rate quoted requires a $100,000 combined account balance. "Member program Platinum" status.
