Union Bank (San Francisco, CA)

Union Bank is offering a $125 bonus for opening any of its personal checking accounts and when you either sign up for direct deposit OR make 3 online bill payments. Checking account must be opened by 10/29/2010. Here's the direct link to Union Bank's promo page.

Some of the important small print includes:

To qualify for the $125 bonus, open a Union Bank Free Checking account or any personal checking account by 10/29/10 and establish one qualifying service. Qualifying services include an ongoing monthly direct deposit of $100 or more, OR 3 Union Bank online bill payments each month to three different payees, beginning the month after account opening. Minimum opening deposit $100. The $125 bonus will be deposited by 1/31/11 into the personal checking account, which must be active and in good standing. Limit one offer per household. Not valid with other offers. As required by law, bonuses must be reported as interest paid and requires Form 1099-INT be sent for tax purposes by 2/15/12. Available for personal accounts only.

One additional small perk is a free Maneki Neko bank.

Union Bank does offer a free checking account with no minimum balance and no monthly service charge.

This promo appears targeted to the Japanese community, but the promotion page does state that you can visit any local branch. Branches are located in California, Washington and Oregon. Update 9/24/10: Reader has reported having problems with his branch honoring this special. Before visiting your local branch, make sure to call your branch to ensure they will honor this promotion.

Credit for this find goes to FW member Bagofchips who posted it on this FW thread.

This sounds tempting but I had a checking account with them a few years ago & they made multiple mistakes every month.  It was a hassle to go there and straigten them out.  It's not worth the headache to me.

Please contact the branch before making a trip. I tried to open an account in a WA branch today, and they had not even heard of this special offer and would not honor it. They checked with their main office, and it sounds like the offer is limited to CA branches. They acknowledged that their Web site ( " ... OR Stop by any local branch today") is misleading. I would have to agree with the previous poster that this bank does not seem to have its act together and should be avoided.

My local branch honored the promo even though it is apparently only for walk-in Japanese customers in Northern California. The branch had not heard of the promo, but the manager said the web site was misleading and they were obligated to comply. They could not tell me how many months of bill pays were required. We'll see if they actually pay me by January 31, 2011.

Glad your branch did the upstanding thing, #3. I was really shocked and angry that they would not honor the promo at my branch, since the terms were listed plain as day on their site.

For those of you who still want to try opening an account to get this promo, I notice that the bank has removed the link to the promo page under "Special Offers" on their home page. So best to take the URL and printout of the promo page with you.

I am in Berkeley, CA. I was able to open an Checking account last weekends though I am not Japanese. One uncertainty is that I haven't gotten a proof of promotion qualification. When I get my debit card, I will call them for sure.

Hi, I am the guy from Berkeley. Days ago, I visit the branch to activate my debit card. The banker shew me my account screen, where I indeed saw a promotion saying "Japanese community ***", though the banker refused to print it out for me saying it is an inner webpage.

I asked about this promo and had no problem with this being honored at the Alameda-Taylor office. The customer service was great, much better than any other local banks I've visited. Thanks for the tip!

I opened the a free checking account a few days ago at one of the local branches in San Jose (990 N 1st st) though I am not Japanese. There is one in Sunnyvale and multiple locations across California.  I also took my sisters and mother to open a new checking account and all of us got a free Maneki Neko bank. Make sure you google for Japanese branches since this promotion is offered through the Tokyo-Mitsubishi Financial Group.

This promotion is valid. Here is the link to the Japanese-speaking locations in California: https://www.unionbank.com/personal/japanese/locations.jsp (they do speak English)!

I opened up an account with Union bank back in September.  Set up direct deposit, confirmed I had met the terms of the offer with my personal banker...  And I did get a Cat bank a few weeks later which was nice.

So I waited patiently until Jan 31st to get the $125.

I called the banker who opened my account on Jan 31st, 2011 asking about the deposit; he said it would post that night.  Fair enough -- the terms said "by the 31st."

Nothing posted.

I called on Feb 1st, 2011 and my banker was not there so I spoke to generic customer service.  They said I'd receive a deposit that night.

Nothing posted.

I called on Feb 2nd, 2011 and spoke to my branch again.  They said they'd call the back office and it would post that night.

Nothing posted.

Kind of annoyed with their promises that the $125 will post.  I played by the rules.  They should too.
