Union Bank is again offering a checking account bonus that's targeted to the Japanese community. A few readers reported problems at some branches with a similar promotion in September. In this new offer, the promotion page has a list of California branches where this promo should be available.
Here's the page link for the promotion. To qualify for the $100, a personal checking account must be opened by January 28, 2011, and you must either sign up for direct deposit, make three online bill payments or make five debit card purchases.
Here's the small print:
To qualify for the $100 bonus, open a Union Bank personal checking account by 1/28/11 and establish one qualifying service, no later than the month after account opening. Qualifying services include an ongoing monthly direct deposit of $100 or more, three Union Bank online bill payments each month to three different payees, OR five debit card purchases or payments per month (excluding cash withdrawals, transfers, or ATM inquiries). Minimum opening deposit $100. The $100 bonus will be deposited by 4/29/11 into the personal checking account, which must be active and in good standing. Limit one offer per household. Not valid with other offers. Available for personal accounts only and for customers who do not have an existing personal checking account. Bonuses are reported as interest paid and a Form 1099-INT will be sent for tax purposes by 2/15/12. Offer valid only at participating branches.
Another perk is a free packet of Otoshidama gift envelopes.
Union Bank does offer a free checking account with no minimum balance and no monthly service charge.
Branches listed in the promo page are located in both Northern and Southern California. Some of the cities include San Francisco, San Jose, Fresno, Los Angeles and Irvine. If you do decide to try this promo, it's a good idea to call the branch first, and then bring a printed page of the offer.
Other Union Bank Offers
Union Bank is also offering a 3% cash back promotion when you open a new checking account with a debit card. I reviewed this promotion last week.
Union Bank also has a special savings account rate, but it's nothing to get excited about. The rate is 1.01% APY on the Preferred Savings
