$150 Checking Account Bonus at Northfield Bank in NY & NJ - Local Only

Northfield Bank is offering a $150 bonus on its Really Free Checking Plus Account. To qualify for the reward, you must open a new Really Free Checking Plus Account. Also, within 90 calendar days of account opening, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • initiate and receive a recurring direct deposit of at least $400 into your account
  • perform 5 signature based (when "credit" is chosen at checkout) debit card transactions. PIN or ATM transactions do not qualify
  • pay 3 bills online using Northfield's Free Online Banking and Bill Payment system

This offer is listed in the bank's checking products page as of 6/12/2011. No expiration date is listed. Below is the important small print:

The reward will be deposited into your account within 100 days of account opening. Reward will be reported on IRS Form 1099-INT. Offer valid as of 05/24/11 and subject to change. Northfield reserves the right to cancel the program at any time. Limit of one reward per household. Account must be open at the end of the 90 day period for the reward to be credited.

The bank is also advertising a CD promotion which has a 1.25% APY for a 16-month term as of 6/12/2011.

It appears that a branch visit is required to open an account. Northfield Bank branches are located in New York City and in the New Jersey cities of Avenel, Rahway, Monroe, Milltown, Linden and East Brunswick.

Went to branch to open the account with promotion page printout, but banker refused to open the account for Queens, NY resident.
