Updated Review of Centera Bank's Reward Checking Account - Kansas Only
It has been almost 3 years since my first review of the reward checking account at Centera Bank in Kansas. Rates have fallen, but the rates have remained very competitive. Below is a summary of the rates and features if certain monthly requirements are met (as of 6/28/2012):
- 3.01% APY for balances up to $25,000
- 0.55% APY for portion of balance over $25,000
- 0.10% APY base rate if requirements are not met
- Reimburses all ATM fees nationwide if requirements are met
The monthly requirements include:
- 10 debit card purchases
- 1 Automatic Payment or Direct Deposit
- Receive your account statement electronically
This is a free checking account with no monthly service fee and no minimum balance requirement.

The bank has an overall health score at DepositAccounts.com of 5 stars (out of 5) with a Texas ratio of 0.43% (excellent) based on March 2012 data. Please refer to our financial overview of Centera Bank for more details. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1946 (FDIC Certificate # 16436).
How This Reward Checking Account Compares
The only Kansas reward checking account that matches this rate and balance cap is at Golden Plains Credit Union. However, only Central and Western Kansas residents are eligible to open the Golden Plains reward checking account.
Reward checking accounts with yields of at least 3% for balances up to $25K have become difficult to find. For reward checking accounts that are available nationwide, the best yield for balances up to $25K is 2.52% APY at ABCO Federal Credit Union.
These rates are accurate as of 6/28/2012.
