Partner Colorado Credit Union has a reward checking account that it calls High Interest Checking. It has a competitive rate for reward checking accounts, but the account has a few downsides. It may appeal to some Colorado residents looking for a top rate at a local credit union. Below is a summary of the High Interest Checking rates and features. The rates are listed in the credit union’s rates page. The features are based on feedback from the credit union CSRs. These are accurate as of 4/12/2013:
- 3.00% APY for balances up to $10,000
- 0.50% APY for portion of balance over $10,000
- 0.10% APY on entire balance if requirements are not met
Monthly requirements to qualify for the above rates include:
- 20 signature-based debit card purchases. Each purchase must be at least $5.
- Use Internet Banking or Mobile Banking
The account is free with no monthly service fee or minimum balance requirement. The credit union is a member of the CU Service Centers which allows members to use branches of other credit unions for many banking transactions. Also, the credit union is part of the CO-OP Network which gives members free access to a nationwide network of ATMs.
Credit union membership is open to all Colorado residents. In the credit union’s history page, there’s a section on becoming a member. At the end of this section it lists an easy way for all Colorado residents to join:
If none of the above affiliations are appropriate for your situation, membership in Consumer’s United is an option and we will even pay the first year’s membership fee.
More details about the Consumer’s United Association are listed in this credit union’s who-can-join PDF document. In this document, it says that you must be a Colorado resident to join this association.

How This Reward Checking Account Compares
The current top of Partner Colorado Credit Union’s High Interest Checking is competitive, but its $10K balance cap is a little low. Also, its monthly requirement of 20 debit card purchases of at least $5 each is another downside. It’s rare for reward checking accounts to require more than 15 debit card purchases per month. A minimum purchase requirement is also rare. One small perk with this reward checking account is that it doesn’t require direct deposit. However, most reward checking accounts allow ACH debit/deposit to satisfy this requirement, so the direct deposit requirement is rarely an issue for most reward checking rate chasers.
There are three all-access credit unions that offer better reward checking deals. These include Great Lakes Credit Union with a 4.00% APY $10K reward checking account, Belvoir Federal Credit Union with a 3.25% APY $15K reward checking account and Lake Michigan Credit Union with a 3.00% APY $15K reward checking account. These rates are accurate as of 4/12/2013.
