University of Iowa Community Credit Union has a good deal on a 15-month CD special. It has a 1.25% APY for a minimum deposit of $1,000. This is also available in an IRA. The special is listed in the credit union’s rates page as of 9/18/2013.
When I last checked with the credit union, the early withdrawal penalty was 180 days of interest for CD terms of 12 months and up. I have not been able to find EWP details in the credit union online documentation.
This credit union used to offer several top CD rates, but its standard rates have fallen quite a bit.
Reward Checking Account Remains a Good Deal
The credit union continues to offer a very competitive reward checking account. It pays 2.75% APY on balances up to $20K if certain monthly requirements are met (as of 9/18/2013). I first reviewed this account in January 2008 when it paid 6.00% on balances up to $50K.
In addition to University of Iowa alumni, membership is open to those who live or work in any of 42 counties in Iowa. Please refer to the credit union's About Us page for more details.
