Top Promotional Certificate Rates at First Flight Federal Credit Union

POSTED ON BY

First Flight Credit Union

First Flight Federal Credit Union is offering several promotional certificate rates. Some of these are very good deals. The two best deals are a 15-month CD with a 1.25% APY and a 23-month CD with a 1.50% APY. Minimum deposit is $10,000. These promotional CDs are listed in the credit union’s certificates page as of 9/4/2013. Thanks to the DA reader who mentioned this special in the comments.

First Flight makes it easy to join. In the certificates page, you can click on the “open account” button. This takes you to the start of the online application. If you’re not yet a member, click the “open a primary account” button. This will take you to a page which lists how you can be eligible to join the credit union. The two main options are being associated with a group or by agreeing to join the Capital Area Preservation for $5. It appears that anyone can join Capital Area Preservation.

The online application doesn’t include the promotional CDs. So you will have to join first before opening these CDs. Once you’re a member, you may be able to open these CDs by phone instead of visiting a branch. I used the credit union’s online chat to confirm, but the CSR just said “I believe so”. Before joining you may want to call the credit union’s members support center at 1-800-807-0766 to confirm.

The DA reader who mentioned this special in the comments said “It was very easy to join, just fill out the online membership and in 15 minutes, I had a member number and could see my account online.”

Yes, It was really easy to join.  I filled out the online new member application.  Everything was completed and a member number assigned.  Since now having an account number and routing #, I also requested ACH from Alliant CU.  Next day the small deposits were in First Flight FCU and I can now deposit funds to open the 15 Mo CD, 1.25%.

Don't waste your time on this.  After a 15-minute wait on hold, the phone CSR told me that a branch visit is required.  These small CUs are not worth dealing with unless they are local.

Double-checked with online chat:

Bethany: Good afternoon. How can I help you?

Steve: I'm not a member, but I'm interested in the promotional CDs. I was told by the 800 number that a branch visit is required. Can I join and open a CD account online?

Bethany: No, the promotional CD cannot be opened online. You may be able to open it over the phone, once you have established membership.

2&3, why didn't you just go online like 1 did?

So simple.  Go to ONLINE Membership and follow the directions.  You don't need to talk to a rep!  I completed everything in just a few minutes.  That even includes the finished Membership Application print-out with the member number.  I printed out, signed and snail mailed to First Flight FCU.

#5, once I became a member with an account number, I ACH'ed funds to the savings acct.  Then you can open the CD by transferring the funds from savings to the CD.  Or as #7 said, you can mail a check or wire the money.  I belong to Allient CU and I use them as a hub for ACHing funds to other establishments.

Anonymous #5,

The issue was not joining online, it was opening the CD.  Now that you've done the easy part of joining, please let us know how you opened the CD.  Ken usually gets the details correct: "The online application doesn’t include the promotional CDs . . . "

The online application includes the promotional CDs.  A promotional CD can be opened online and then you mail a check to the credit union or wire the money.

a little unusual, but i noticed this in the truth-in-savings  disclosure re cd automatic renewal: there is no grace period after an automatic renewal in which you may withdraw funds from this account or make additional deposits without a penalty being imposed. if you wish to close this account without penalty, you must close the account the day before it is automatically renewed for another term.
