Survey of the Best CD Rates for October 11, 2013

Survey of the Best CD Rates for October 11, 2013

What happens in Washington D.C. in the next week will likely impact future CD rates. If the debt ceiling isn’t increased, that could weaken the economy and give the Fed reasons to keep its zero interest rate policy in effect for many more years. That could reverse the trend of rising long-term CD rates that we’ve seen over the last few months.

Perhaps the uncertainty in Washington is the reason few banks and credit unions changed their CD rates this week. There were just a few changes, and the changes included both rate hikes and cuts.

The most noteworthy change was the promotional 6-month CD at Bank5 Connect. The promotional 6-month CD has a 1.10% APY on balances up to $100K (see post).

Both EverBank and Nationwide Bank increased their 4-year CD rates. Nationwide Bank had the largest increase. Its Jumbo 4-year CD APY is now 1.70%.

Salem Five Direct lowered its special 2-year CD yield from 1.15% to 0.85%. This new rate is so low that I removed it from the table. Salem Five Direct continues to offer a good 5-year CD deal with a 2.00% APY.

Local CD Deals

Like the nationwide CDs, there weren’t many local CD rate changes, and the changes were mixed.

Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union in Central Texas, Horizon Credit Union in Washington State and First Republic Bank lowered their CD rates. Horizon had the largest rate cut. Its 5-year CD yield decreased from 2.22% to 1.92%. That caused me to remove Horizon from the list.

I added one bank to the local tables. Investors Bank in New York and New Jersey is offering two good short-term deals. One is a money market account with a 1.05% APY guaranteed until April 30, 2014. The other one is a 13-month CD with a 1.10% APY.

Finally, if you’re looking for 5-year CDs and you don’t mind opening a CD online, MidFirst Direct continues to offer a good deal. Its 5-year CD still has a 2.25% APY. It’s not available in all states, but residents of several states are eligible (AR, AZ, CA, FL, MO, NH, NV, NY, OK, TX, and WY).

Long-Term CD Break Strategy

For the short-term CDs in my lists, you might notice CDs with the note "5-year CD closed after X years". These take into account the yield after the early withdrawal penalty is applied. Since Ally Bank's 5-year CD only has a 60-day interest penalty, it's still a good deal when closed early even with the recent rate cuts.

If you want to compare the effective yields of other CDs after the early withdrawal penalties, please refer to our CD early withdrawal penalty calculator.

The risks of planning for early withdrawals of long-term CDs were recently highlighted by the deposit agreement change at Ally. The risks have also been seen at credit unions which have raised the early withdrawal penalties on existing CDs. I have more details in this blog post.

Note About the CD Survey

As I described in my rate table overview, you can use our CD rate tables to find the best rates for both nationally available CDs and local CDs. This CD survey blog posts are intended to highlight nationwide CD deals that may not be apparent in the tables. For example, I'll include the post-penalty yields of a few long-term CDs.

The CD survey blog posts are also intended to highlight the local CD deals that are available in large metro areas. There are many high CD rates, but most of these are at small banks in rural areas or at small credit unions with very narrow fields of membership. In these local CD surveys, my focus is on local CD deals that are in big cities or that are available in large areas of a state.
