Checking and Money Market Promotions at Fifth Third Bank

POSTED ON BY

Fifth Third Bank (OH)

Fifth Third Bank has a new checking account promotion. They’ll give $150 to Stand Up To Cancer and $150 to you when you open a new checking account with direct deposit and make three online bill payments. The account must be opened by March 31, 2014. The direct deposit and the three online bill payments must be completed within 90 days of account opening to qualify for the bonus. Bonus will be deposited into the new checking account within 6 weeks of completing requirements. The full details of this offer is listed in the bank’s promotions page.

The bank also has a money market special that guarantees a 1.00% APY through September 30, 2014. It requires that you open the Relationship Money Market account and maintain a balance of $25K or more. It also requires that you have a premium checking account. This special doesn’t appear to be listed on the bank’s website. A reader emailed me news of this, and I called for additional details. I was told by a bank CSR that this special isn’t available at all Fifth Third branches. It’s only available in certain regions. So you’ll have to call your local branch to see if it’s available. If you call, please leave a comment.

Fifth Third continues to offer some decent long-term CD rates. I reported on these earlier this month.

Availability

For the checking account promotion, you can apply online or at a branch. The online application restricts new accounts to only certain states. The application will inform you if your zip code is in an area where they offer accounts.

I recently completed their last offer $250 bonus for opening their established checking account - $5,000 minimum direct deposit (ACH was fine) and bill pay. Immediately after completing those requirements, the bonus posted. the quickest bonus post that I have seen on a non-credit card account. They did try to shadily charge me for checks that I never asked for - $13 or so and that had to be argued over the phone regretably. So make sure to tell them - do not send me checks that you will charge me for - or else they will apparently do so and act like you knew about it. Besides that - it has been a good experience. YMMV

When was this $250 bonus? Is it still available? Also, do they do a hard pull? Thanks

For me - it came as a postcard in my area (Florida) :
https://www.53.com/mkg/checking/mover-bonus/pick-your-bonus.html

$250 for opening a new Preferred, Enhanced or Established checking account with a qualified direct deposit.

There was also a $150 bonus offer (there appears to be a new current offer as well now if you do some searching:  $150 fifth third bank promotion - stand up to cancer ) and then there was a $250 offer for the higher tier checking accounts that I opted for.

The link to the 5/3rd $250 bonus there had all the specifics - I do not know if you have to have the postcard (my offer expired the end of November 2013 I believe) in hand or not.

Soft pull/ChexSytems check ONLY for my checking account without a debit card or overdraft - no hard credit pull.

Apparently there is a $200 bonus current offer as well (expires end of March 2014) - https://www.53.com/mkg/checking/mover-bonus/mover-prospect-200.html

All appear to need the code on the postcard if you apply via phone - if I were you, I would call fifth third directly and see if you cannot find a helpful associate who may know the current bonus offers/codes etc... worth a shot. Here is yet another current (until March 31, 2014 offer for $150): http://su2c.53.com/
