Best Bank Account Interest Rates - Summary for Week Ending March 9, 2014

In the last few weeks there has been debate about the weather’s impact on the recent disappointing economic news. After Friday’s employment report showing stronger-than-forecast jobs gain, it’s starting to look like the weather was the cause of the slowdown. So expectations are growing that economic growth will accelerate and the Fed will continue to taper. Eventually, that will lead to higher deposit rates.

Treasury yields were up quite a bit last week after Friday’s upbeat jobs report. The change in Treasury yields and Fed funds futures in the last week are shown below. The following numbers are based on Daily Treasury Yield Curve Rates and the CME Group FedWatch.

Treasury Yields:

  • 1-month: 0.06% up from 0.04% last week
  • 6-month: 0.09% up from 0.08% last week
  • 2--year: 0.38% up from 0.33% last week
  • 5--year: 1.65% up from 1.51% last week
  • 10-year: 2.80% up from 2.66% last week
  • 30-year: 3.72% up from 3.59% last week

Fed funds futures' probability of rate hike by:

  • Jan 2015: 21% up from 15% last week
  • Apr 2015: 44% up from 35% last week
  • Jul 2015: 70% up from 58% last week
  • Oct 2015: 89% up from 81% last week

Savings & Checking Account Rates

Last week was quiet in terms of rate changes in the savings and money market accounts that I track below. All of the banks and credit unions kept their rates the same.

The number of institutions offering a non-promo 1% savings or money market account remains at six (I consider Salem’s rate a promo for new customers). SFGI Direct is the latest one in this club with its 1.01% APY savings account. Four of those six are First Trade Union Bank savings account, MySavingsDirect savings account, the new iGObanking.com money market account and the SmartyPig savings account. All of these are offering a 1.00% APY. The highest rate continues to be at Connexus Y.E.S. Money Market Account which has a top-tier APY of 1.15% for a $100K minimum balance. An important downside of this account is that it requires an active checking account and direct deposit.

Reward Checking Accounts

This was also a quiet week for the nationally available reward checking accounts. Just one institution changed its rates. Unfortunately, it was a rate cut.

First New England Federal Credit Union lowered its Rewards Checking account rates by 25 basis points. Without a relationship account member status, the top rate is now only 1.01% APY for balances up to $15K when certain monthly requirements are met. With a relationship account member status, the top rate is now 2.01% APY for balances up to $15K. When I first reported on this account back in 2008, it had a 4.01% APY on balances up to $50K.

There is another change that was first announced in February, but it won’t take effect until March 20. In February, Redneck Bank and its two sister banks (AmericaNet and Evantage) announced that they will be cutting their Rewards Checking top rate from 2.00% to 1.50% APY. The balance cap will remain the same at $10K.

There continues to be only six banks and credit unions in my table below offering reward checking yields of over 2.00% for balances of at least $15K.

Could you change the color of the type for the date of your daily posts?  The color is hard to read.  Thanks.
