Estimating The 2013 Social Security COLA Increase

For those on social security, you might want to have a heads up on what the 2013 COLA might be. According to this Finance Buff blog post, it will likely be 1.6%. This is based on an estimated September 2012 CPI-W which won't be known until mid October. (The CPI-U released on that same date can be used to calculate the I bond inflation rate that will take effect in November.)

I'm assuming whatever modest increase I might get in social security will be offset by increased Medicare Part B. But perhaps I am overly pessimistic.

Bozo: That is the way it usually is for those on SS and Medicare unfortunately. They give with one hand and take away with the other. We have just found out our Medicare Advantage Plan has raised our premiums $11.00 month for each of us also. It never ends.
