Old People Versus Babies, In One Graph

Friday, November 9, 2012 - 8:02 AM
In the U.S. today, there are 23 elderly people for every 100 working-age people. That ratio has been rising for decades — and it's projected to nearly double by 2060. This is a problem. Working-age Americans pay for programs like Medicare that support the elderly. So the more that ratio rises, the heavier the burden is for working Americans.

We are already seeing the unsustainability caused by this demographic in Europe. Many European countries have negative population growth rates and generous entitlement programs. Result: financial crisis. It seems there are only two possible solutions. Either have more babies (unlikely to happen in developed countries) or cut entitlement program benefits (politically unpopular). Both solutions mean a probable drop in living standards. Do nothing and the whole system eventually collapses, much like a Ponzi scheme. Odd, isn't it, that given the rising ratio of retirees to working-age adults that the federal government wants contraceptives to be available for free? Seems counterintuitive.

“It's long overdue for the president Obama to have a heart-to-heart talk with the nation, telling everyone we are on an unsustainable path of military and entitlement spending, and that massive cuts in both are long overdue.”

Have we forgotten that the elderly if they worked, paid into the Medicare and Social Security programs?

Wil #4:  Yes I did because you got the wrong impression from what I posted. We have "smileys" we can use for when we are joking but I do not know what to use for when I am being sarcastic or ironic.  I bet you also noticed I changed my other posts so they wouldn't be confusing if anyone but you and I are posting on this thread.

Actually, I hadn't seen your other posts until this morning. I had guessed, or at least hoped, that you were being ironic, hence my original comment #4. But if I was uncertain as to your meaning, there was certainly a risk that others might take it the wrong way. So by responding as I did, it prompted you to give it more thought, which you have in fact done, which is a positive outcome. I hope you know that I am not one of your "critics."

LATER:

Paoli2,

I sent you a private message. Just in case you haven't noticed, click "control panel," and then private message "inbox." I'll be interested in your reply. Oh, also, you have a great day, too! Best wishes!

Wil:  "All things come to those who perservere".   I actually have a poster who admits to not being one of my critics which means he is aware I do have a "lot" of them.  :)  Seriously, I knew if you may have misunderstood my post others may also and I really do appreciate your bringing it to my attention.  Feel free to post-check all my posts for me. With your help, maybe before long I will have "less" critics and people will take me more seriously.  Have a great day!
