Inflation And Food Prices - Cost Of Thanksgiving Dinner

Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 5:44 AM
The American Farm Bureau Federation released its annual estimate of the price of a classic Thanksgiving dinner. According to the AFBF, the cost increased from $49.20 last year to $49.48 this year. That's only an increase of 0.57%.

Have you seen food prices rise more than that in the last year?

In October, the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) reported its Everyday Price Index (EPI) which includes food but not items rarely purchased like TVs. Here's how EPI has changed this year along with the conventional CPI:
According to the EPI, everyday prices have increased 5.2 percent so far this year—about three times the 1.9 percent increase that the seasonally adjusted CPI shows over the same period.

All I know is it seems like there are fewer and fewer grocery bags, but more $ being put out.  Maybe people are getting better and using coupons and sales for their holiday shopping, thus the overall Turkey feast did not go up by much.
