Estimating The Next Series I Savings Bond Inflation Component - March 2013

Last Friday the Labor Department released CPI numbers for February. We now have CPI-U data for 5 of the 6 months that will be used to generate the next Series I Savings Bond inflation component. We’ll know the exact rate when March CPI data is released on April 16, 2013.  The Savings Bond Advisor blog has calculated an estimate of what the I Bond inflation component may be. Here’s an excerpt of the post:
The Series I bond inflation component is based on the difference between the March and September levels of the CPI-U. The September level of 231.407 will be the base for the next rate announcement. If inflation for all six months of the period matches the rate during the first five months, the next I bond inflation component would be 0.79%.
